The steel does not go all the way through the handle; it ends about 1.5 inches in (about where the grey section ends). This ice cream scoop handle broke (catastrophic failure of the plastic at the very end of the steel shank - a very likely stress concentration) which consequently lead to a broken bowl as I lost control of the carton of ice cream and the continued movement of my arms following the failure of the handle. I would not recommend this product. It failed during its designed application (scooping ice cream).

CAME IN PACKAGE AND WAS NICE IN GOOD CONDITION AND HAS A GREAT SHAPE TO CUT THRU HARD ICE CREAMS AND ICE CREAM SHOULD NOT GET STUCK IN IT LIKE SOME OF THE ROUND KINDS I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS ICE CREAM SCOOP TO ALL ICE CREAM LOVERS!!!

Over the years, I have purchased several different brands of ice cream scoops including Pampered Chef, Rubbermaid and many others. My experience was that the metal pitted on all of them.

As embarrassing as this is to admit, I use this to scoop ice cream on almost a daily basis (we love our ice cream) which certainly puts the scoops to the test. This is the only scoop that shows no signs of pitting, despite almost daily trips to the dishwasher. In addition, it is the perfect size for scooping pancake batter onto the griddle every Sunday. I am ordering a second one because it truly has become a staple in our home!

I noticed that two raters indicated that the metal broke off from the handle. I have not had any signs of weakness in my scoop and have to think that this was perhaps a faulty tool or two, but definitely not indicative of a faulty product overall. I definitely recommend it over any other one I have tried to date!

I have a few products from this brand but every single one of them is great. Including this ice cream spoon. Love how it's sturdy and it's non slip handle. I keep buying more product from Calphalon.

I grew up with the perfect ice cream scoop. It was all metal, the perfect shape and was easy to heat up to cut through hard ice cream. Alas, my parents wouldn't part with it, and I was left with a quest for a replacement. My wife and I tried 4 or 5 different ice cream scoops before we tried this one. It is great. Easily cuts through the ice cream, has a great shape (also holds pancake batter which my wife likes to scoop with an ice cream scoop). The only reason it didn't get five stars: it's not the one I was looking for.
