I'm not really a Verdi sort of guy - I have listened to or watched Aida, Rigoletto and Otello (in fact the 1995 Levine Met Otello was the first opera I ever saw when it came on PBS back when I was a kid) but I'd usually much rather listen to Wagner or Strauss or Mozart than Verdi or any other Italian opera for that matter. Not to say that I dislike the Italian composers or am unable to appreciate them, it's just that my preferences lie with the Germans (and French) when it comes to musical drama. In fact, I had never heard La Traviata in its entirety before purchasing and listening to this performance of it - only excerpts and such. I say all this in order to give perspective on my review, which comes from someone who, though not a complete Verdi neophyte, is not well versed on his stuff in general or this opera in particular.

That said, I really liked this recording. I have a special place in my heart for Carlos Kleiber. He was an awesome (in both the original and the slang sense of the word) conductor, showing a brilliance in everything he did. I devoured his Beethoven and Schubert symphonies on disc with glee, I enjoyed (though not as much) his recording of Der Freischütz and was enraptured by his recording of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. His conducting here does not disappoint, either. He is light - some scenes *flutter* by - but knows when to turn up the drama.

The singers are all first rate. Sherrill Milnes is good as the Baron.

Without question, this is the best "Traviata" I've ever heard. Cotrubas, Milnes, and Domingo are superlative. But, to me, the real star of the performance is Carlos Kleiber. The clarity of the orchestral textures, the dynamic tempi (where appropriate), the precision of the playing by the Bayerische Staatsorchester, yes, even the startling 'shots' by the timpanist, all are world class. I heard "La Traviata" in SF in July and, musically, this version is so much better it's nolo contendere. Strongest possible recommendation.

Look I agree this is a wonderful recording (check the review on its original release), but, all-round, I prefer the Caballe/Pretre recording. Yes the Callas is wonderful too, but I hate the vicious cuts to the score.

I've knocked a star off this one for what some may think is a petty reason... Domingo had a beautiful silvery voice - he and we know he didn't have a top C (or B natural) - so please tell me why he or Kleiber or the Producer, allowed the God-awful, nasal, squawk he produces at the end of the cabaletta "O mio rimorso" to remain in this recording? It ruins a great Verdi set-piece which doesn't even ask for a top C. Grrrr!

10.12 - I now understand that this awful "squawk" was "spliced" into the recording in the editing stage, which only makes the decision worse.
