I love hearts of palm. I can't eat enough. These were great! I read some earlier review, which were up and down. No kidding, these were great! In a salad, on their own, always. Will definitely order again. I'm sorry I used profanity in my initial review.

I purchase these locally, so my review will focus strictly on the product and not on variable issues like pricing and other costs.

This is a low-calorie, healthy ingredient for salads that is not only delicious, but perfect on a hot day. I like the convenience of having these pre-cut into morsel sized pieces, as well as the firmness and texture that indicates quality.

Nutritionally, a whole can of these is 120 calories with a total of 1060mg of sodium - that is per can and not per serving. The sodium can be greatly reduced by rinsing these before serving. That will not interfere with the flavor, but the diminished saltiness will make them somewhat bland.

A typical salad that I make is a bed of arugula or spinach, some red onion and diced tomatoes, diced bell peppers and these. I drizzle olive oil and squeeze of lemon, a touch of sea salt and fresh ground black pepper, and serve. Sometimes I will add cubes of feta cheese to give it some body. These hearts also make a great garnish, or even a perfect morsel when laying out a tapas or meze spread (they also go perfectly with olives.)

One final use I have is when I babysit my friend's African Gray parrot the bird loves these.

Hearts of palm have gone up so much that I was happy to find this, even though I did have to buy 12 cans. The hearts of palm taste good, but the "palmitos" name is actually providing some information: These are not full stalks of hearts of palm, the kind that go all the way to the top of the can. Rather, they're slices that average about 3/4 of an inch long. The fatness of the stalks also varies considerably, but that's usually the case.

I use hearts of palm in salads and really like that these come sliced. I could buy them at the grocery store if I want to pay a lot more per can. Instead, I opt for the convenience of having cans of sliced hearts of palm in the pantry. Goya produces high quality foods so the hearts of palm are tender, not woody or tough.
