Having giving up on cheap, plastic garden hose reels I did a search for a substitute. One that would not leak or break. I came across this and that other popular model for $35 more, both sold through Amazon.

The manufacture warns about leakage at the reel connection, but I didn't have any. I didn't need the longer 'jumper' hose supplied so I tried a shorter hose with thin, low quality fittings. They could not be hand tightened enough to the reel to stop leakage. Using wrenches destroyed the fitting on that hose, since it was only made for finger tightening, which was insufficient. Using the supplied hose work ok after I shortened it at the faucet end, but see below.

The unusual hose connection design has it's pluses and minuses. What would work better is a single 90 degree 'elbow' with a male on one end and female on the other so the hose could cross into the center of the reel like all other reels, not over the outer edge. See below.

Pros;

1. Metal construction,
2. Wall mountable,
3. Brass hose fittings (but see below),
4. Easily holds 125' of heavy duty 5/8" hose,
5. Plenty of mounting holes,
6. Supplied 'jumper' hose has much needed heavy duty fittings to tighten down at reel connection. (don't even try a short piece with plastic fittings)

Cons;
1. Made in China. For some foolish reason, I thought it was made here. (foolish me),
2. Hose connects outside of the reel causing the routing of the hose to go over the reel. If you use a thin, cheap, small diameter hose, it will kink and pinch causing reduced or no water flow,
3. Supplied short hose is very stiff, hard to form to position/conceal,
4. Two wrenches are needed to tighten down that hose to the reel at the fitting,
5. Somewhat permanent mounting, not easily removable to store inside for winter, unlike my previous plastic reel holder. Importer recommends one of those covers used for outdoor grills.

Purchased 2 of these reels. 4 months after installation they are beginning to rust and it is only a meter of time before they become a mess. Especially disconcerting especially since this product is involved with water routinely. Wrote to the company and they have indicated that they don't stand behind the product regards rusting. There are numerous quality finishing techniques available today - there is no excuse for poor finishes on any product.

I had high expectation for this product. It is very solid, strong construction, and will last many years. However, it is rusting like crazy. In the outer to large "wheels" that keep the hose inside there are small holes (see picture). Not sure why there are small holes here, but whatever the case is humidity gets inside there and rust out the inside of the wheel. So rust continually runs out. It took a few weeks for this to start. At first it wasn't much, and I thought maybe it is coming from somewhere else. At 2 months it just pools in the base of the unit. Now I have a nice orange stain growing on my driveway. I contacted the company who stated "I'm sorry for the issues you are having with your reel. If you are wanting a refund, you will need to contact Amazon. We send replacement parts only." When I looked at Amazon's website I was outside the 1 month warranty. I also notice that Amazon no longer sells this product directly. What I ended up doing was letting the unit dry out for a few days, and then taking waterproof tape and covering up the holes. For the time being this is working well. Only time will tell what will happen next and how long this unit will actually last. Please see my pictures for rust examples and what I did with tape.

Update: After another few months my amazing waterproof tape job failed miserably. I will attach a pic of the pile of rust juice. I actually found an old hose holder in someone's trash pile, and it is going to work just fine. I am going to give this thing away to someone who can mount it over dirt. Then the rust won't stain the driveway.

The hose reel has one very bad fault. The fitting for the hose is outside the reel, so you have to run the hose through the side of the reel and to the fitting. When you roll up the hose, it kinks because of the tight curve, and, puts such a strain on the fitting that leaks are also a problem. I bought 2 right angles, 3 two-inch pieces, and hose fittings and brought the fitting to the inside of the reel and it works fine now. Another problem is when you pull only a short section of hose off the reel, it keeps spinning and unreels the rest of the hose onto the floor.
It will do, but certainly is no more than that. Definitely too high priced for what you get, and the modifications you have to make.

I purchased this hose reel thinking it would last a long time. The metal is well constructed but other than that I have been disappointed. I purchased this reel about a year ago and I only bring it out during the Wisconsin summer months.

The paint has already started to breakdown.

The seal on the hose swivel leaks often.

The paint chips easily.

I am going to toss this reel and get a better brand.

Started to hook the hose up and saw the brass fitting on the reel (where I'm supposed to attach the enclosed short piece of hose) is stuffed with the white plumbing tape. I dug some out but can't reach it all. Have a look at the photo. Will this wash out? Should I return the item? Any advice is appreciated.
