Alpha v. Propper v. Rothco

I am a M-65 junkie / collector. I currently own 5 of these jackets. Over the years I have owed over 15. Some have been knock-offs, some have been genuine government issue. Some of the brands I've had include Golden, John Owenby, So Sew, Alpha, Rolane, Propper, and Rothco/Ultra Force ("Rothco").

Golden, John Owenby, So Sew, Rolane, etc. are genuine GI issue. You will only find them at surplus or vintage stores*. As such, this review is only of the jackets that you will have a decent chance of actually finding. Those brands are Rothco, Propper, and Alpha.

Rothco/Ultra Force
These are the easiest to come across. Almost every army/navy retail and eStore stocks this brand. They come in two versions. First, is the 100% cotton "Vintage" version. Second, is the cotton/poly "Deluxe" version. The Deluxe version comes with a removable liner for colder weather, the Vintage version does not. Neither version is made to military specifications (they ARE knock-offs, after all). The Vintage model is your best option if you are going for, well, the "vintage look." If you are just going for "looks" then this is THE jacket you want. They come pre-faded (and quite nicely, at that), and have a good fabric texture that you won't see in ANY of the other jackets, even the higher-end versions. Next to my 1973 USAF genuine GI issue M-65 jacket, my "vintage" Rothco is my first choice for "looks." However, the Rothco Vintage jacket comes with this corny velcro "Ultra Force" nameplate. You should ditch that. Quickly.

However, there are some downfalls to the Vintage jacket. First, is that since it is 100% cotton, when it gets wet, it gets REALLY wet. Can you say "sponge?Read more ›

A quality jacket

I'm very happy with this jacket so far. It looks good, and the construction and materials appear to be first-rate. It looks to be even sturdier than my old M-65, and that one remains wearable, if a little ratty-looking, after more than fifteen years of heavy use.

Fit: I'm about 6-2/210, and the large fits me quite well. Many jackets are a little short through the sleeves for my long arms, but this one is just about right.

Construction: Everything about it looks and feels good and solid, from the stitching to the zipper. The whole jacket feels reassuringly sturdy. If anything, it feels a little stiff, but I expect that will ease up after a little break-in.

Features: Pretty much your standard M-65, although the two inside pockets are a nice addition. Definitely water-repellent; it's already kept me dry through some heavy rains. The jacket has buttons to hold a liner; the liner isn't included, but is available separately. (I still have my old one, so this wasn't an issue for me.)

Value: The Alpha jacket isn't the least expensive around, but materials and construction appear to be a notch above others I've seen. If you're just looking for a fashion statement, one of the cheaper options might do, but if you're expecting to wear it a lot and use it hard, this one is worth the extra bucks. I expect to be wearing this for years to come.

Decent

Not quite the same level of quality as the Army issued field jacket, but it's still better than many of the knock-offs that I've come across. It would have gotten 4 stars, had the buttons been properly sewn into it, but after having one fall off after about 15 minutes of use, I discovered that they weren't properly attached. I pulled all the interior buttons out by hand easily, and resewed the top buttons in. Now I can't use a liner, but the rest of the jacket is pretty good quality.

Alpha M-65 Field Coat

I found the coat to be well thought out. It is well made from nylon 50/50 cotton. The coat is made in China, my only disappointment. Alpha did receive my email and did change the coat size after I submitted my order here on line. Thank you to the folks at Alpha.

An experienced M-65 owner pointed out the coats are designed to be worn over a full uniform. Order one size smaller than you would ordinarily. This is what I did and am happy with the fit. I usually wear a medium I had Alpha ship a small. The sleeves cover half the length of my hand below the wrist. In the chest I can wear a light sweater and a construction worker's vest (Carhartt) comfortably with a little room to spare. Much more and the coat would be too small. I am 5'5" tall with a 40 inch chest and 145 pounds. 31 inches from the centre of my neck at the shoulders to wrist along a bent arm.

I see there is provision for a separate, button on hood. I haven't seen any where to buy this item so far. Yes, the coat has an attached light hood inside the zip-up collar.

Incidentally, should you wish to sew on any patches,crests,velcro ect.,you can gain access between the coat shell and liner through the unzipped collar.

I bought the liner which I can recommend. Buttoned up by its self, the liner is only just large enough over a light sweater. Fastened into the jacket the fit eases some. Sleeves again a little long, The knitted cuff controls the little extra length. The knitted cuff is comfortable against the skin.
