One of the things I learned from years of loving kitchen gadgets is that the right tool, especially if it was high quality, can make all the difference. It can make the mundane tasks fun. After a year of sewing, I don't think cutting the fabric is all that fun, but it has become much easier since I invested in good shears. These are my go to scissors for shears and knits.

They are nice and heavy. They are very sharp and slice through fabric like a hot knife through butter. They are perfect!

These are my wife's third purchase of Gingher's serrated scissors. She's a seamstress and embroiderer. She says the serrated edge enables cutting of the sheerest fabric &I know they're super sharp. She's had three pair because they can only take so many resharpenings. A bit pricey but they're worth it.

One of the Best Made Scissors Around, and these specifically for silks and lightweight fabrics

I have the pinking shears which are finicky but I also bought another pair for a total of three. The other pair are for all other fabrics. Highly recommended for anyone and the prices on AMAZON are really cheap! At a actual sewing store, full retail is around $100 each.

Still, I would not pay over around $20 for these scissors, if I want the top I would do more research and try to find them at the best price. I have bought three of these, the pinking shears, dressmakers shears and serrated edge for fine fabrics such as satin and silks. It looks like "KAI" might be the top scissors as far as qauality that I can find with quick research, but a lot more money.

I will eventually trade up I am sure, but not until my skill level warrants such an expense.

I am new to Gingher scissor usage but previously purchased a pair of knife edge bent trimmers and was sold! Never to use a different brand for my crafts and sewing projects. These are not as sharp. I may have misunderstood their usage design but overall they seemed a bit dull in comparison to the other pair I bought. They are still by far better than any other brand I have tried and are sharp just not as sharp as expected.

So far I have used these scissors on silk charmeuse, silk chiffon and china silk. The grip on the fabric is great and they are very accurate. They cut cleanly from the tip to the inner edge of the blades. For myself, I would prefer them to have a bit more angle from the handle so I don't have to lift them up so far to cut. Longer blades would also be nice. The blunt tip is sometimes difficult to get under the fabric, but it does a great job of preventing snags.

I sew regularly and I love these shears! When my boyfriend used my old shears to cut the heads off of pins (yeah, that was a huge problem), I wanted to get some better shears that would hopefully last a long time. I wanted to go with all metal, as my last pair had a plastic foundation, and it just felt too cheap. These feel as sturdy as they look, and cut like a dream. I use them for fabric, elastic, string, paper, etc., anything soft and appropriate for keeping shears sharp. I am extremely happy with this purchase and know these shears will last me years to come! Plus it's a great price on Amazon, much better than craft and sewing stores (unless you get a good coupon)!

UPDATE 4/24/15: Now that I've used these a little more, I had to drop the rating down to 4 stars. Basically, when I use them for more than like half an hour, my hand will be extremely sore the next day. And the longer I use them, the worse it is. Once, I spent over 6 hours pinning and cutting thick layers of fabric, and by the end my hand was literally swollen, which took through the next day to go down. If you're just cutting one "thing" (like a dress or something), these are fine. However, if you're cutting more things for longer periods of time, the handle/weight of them might not be great. I would also preface that I'm a very small, easily bruised person, and my hand is similarly delicate. However, I've never had this problem with other shears, and I think the weight of them has a lot to do with it. I love that they are metal throughout, but for me it comes with a downside. Maybe if I cut out a ton of things more often, my hand would strengthen and not bruise/swell, but alas I don't, so I've learned to expect pain when I have large projects to cut out.
