Toni Price's latest disc rocks roundly with a groove that churns like the best Stax release. The title track is from Jesse Winchester's 1981 Bearsville LP Talk Memphis that Chris Smither also recorded on his CD Up on the Lowdown. Toni's version ignites with a punchy rhythm section and David Grissom's searing electric lead guitar, "Where were you when Elvis died? A lot of folks sat & cried. Well, I don't mind telling you that I did a little crying too." Toni has recorded about 15 Gwil Owen penned songs including "Something," a favorite of mine from her Hey CD. She records 4 tracks on this set including "What I'm Putting Down" written with Richard Ferreira that blazes, "I know what I like & I like what I see." Allen Toussaint's "Mean Man" boils with a soul groove and a tasty horn chart, "When I feel I'm falling down he just tries to come around, Acts as if he doesn't know I'm in love, he hurts me so." "Am I Groovin' U" written by Jeff Barry simmers like a midtempo soul stew, "And when you need me & you call my name in the lonely night, Do you feel it? Do you really believe everything's going to be all right?" Isaac Hayes & David Porter wrote "Leftover Love" from which Toni milks every ounce of emotion. Toni records the title track from Wendy Colonna's ...Read more ›

I first came across Toni Price on an Austin City Limits show. I was mesmerized by her. I don't know anything about technique, I am not a musician. What I do know, is how music makes me feel This lady makes me feel it. I purchased all the CD's she had available on her website, Midnight Pumpkin, Sol Power, and on occasion would check in on her goings on. Found she didn't tour, was devoted to her daughter, and she gained that much more favor with me. Her music wasn't for fame, though she was famous in her circle. Unfortunately it wasn't for money either, though everybody needs some. So, in my own way, I try and support her by buying her discs. I now own them all and don't think there is a bad one in the bunch, from front to back. That is another thing I like about her discs, I can listen to them front to back. In the end, I traveled to Austin for the sole purpose of seeing Toni. She was available, friendly, welcoming and down to earth. No Diva here. Support her, she deserves it.

I was really hoping Toni would throw down on this and do a straight-up Memphis blues and soul record. But it falls flat. I got bored. And I love some of her earlier stuff...Swim Away and Hey! in particular. But this feels too produced and uninspired. Having seen her perform at The Continental Club in Austin, she needs to find a way to capture that same rawness, that same energy, that same loose groove. I had high hopes Talk Memphis would bring that out of her. Too bad she couldn't walk the talk.

Great soul rock album. Perhaps her best one. A good debut if you don't know her. Then try her first one "swim away", more bluesy, and then "midnight pumpkin", more poppy.
A french fan.
