1.0 out of 5 stars ARE YOU READY TO ROCK? OH HELL NO... 1.25 OUT OF 10, March 30, 2009
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
Need a reason for why I don't believe Sony's approval board cares about PS2 releases anymore? Look no further. Just when you were hoping the chipmunks had forever been put into their graves to die in the bargain bins at the Dollar Tree, Fox decided to resurrect these children of Satan in a big-name motion picture that did well at the box office. Looking to capitalize on the success of the film, new publisher Brash Entertainment along with developer Sensory Sweep released this abomination of mankind onto the PS2, the Wii, the DS, and PC. FUN FACT: Did you know that Brash Entertainment started just two years ago in the industry, and closed this year thanks to its titles like this? The company promised to make good licensed games. What we ended up with were games that were worse than droves of other licensed games put together. If you want to play a game about anthropomorphic animals I suggest you either play the Sly Cooper series, or if you want such a game except it's based on a kids film, I would recommend the surprisingly good Over the Hedge game (Which is superior in every aspect to this game). While Alvin and the Chipmunks isn't the worst game ever, it certainly is one of the worst games on the PS2 and one of the worst games I've ever had the displeasure of playing.
WHAT THE GAME IS: One of the most horribly designed music games ever. You play as the four chipmunks who have started their own band, and intend on getting to the big Rockathonapalooza by playing through a series of gigs before meeting their goals. You play a series of songs you forgot about long ago and when the memories start coming back, they're not good ones.
GRAPHICS: There were games on the Nintendo 64 and original Playstation that looked better than this. Blurry, ugly textures. Hideous environmental designs. Crappy animation. Bad character designs. This game's got just about every graphical problem imaginable. It's not the worst looking game ever, but I can list a lot of other PS2 games from years ago that look way better than this.
MUSIC: Any goodness left in these long-forgotten songs is destroyed by the high-pitched squeaky voice-work from the chipmunks. It's torture listening to these little b@stards sing.
SOUND: The voice-work from the chipmunks is how you would expect. The rest of the game is too quiet though.
GAMEPLAY: This is where the entire experience is truly at its utmost worst. There are four colored circles at each corner of the screen. The notes you must play are stars that fly to whatever corner the color of the stars corresponds to. To play the notes you must use the L and R buttons on the controller. Left upper corner is L1. Right upper corner is R1. Left lower corner is L2. Right lower corner is R2. This interface does not work well, especially if you have notes flying in three or even four separate corners. It's rather difficult keeping track of all the notes that fly by. When you finish the song you're playing the game will give you a rating from 1 to 4 stars. As long as you keep your rock-o-meter's flame on top going, you will easily pull off four-star averages. However this is no four-star game. The gameplay is a terrible mess thanks to the God-awful interface and confusing control scheme. This game can be completed in two hours, though I'm sure anyone who spends a half hour with it will run away screaming from the agonizing torture this game brings. When you play it, you will want to put these little chipmunks back in their grave that they crawled out of. Without a doubt one of the worst releases to ever plague the PS2.
OVERALL: A horrible experience from beginning to end. This is one rock tour you're better off running away from. Unless you intend to punish your children for something bad they did, stay far away from this game at all costs. Thankfully, this version is difficult to find.
THE GOOD: Well, um....Yeah, I can't think of anything.
THE BAD: EVERYTHING!

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun, but not a lot of challenge., May 6, 2008
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Our boys, ages 10 and 7, enjoy the game. They are big Chipmunks fans so after seeing the movie, they asked for the PS2 game. The music is great! Graphics are OK.
