This type of screw was the industry standard fro contractors making decks, etc. It was called the Phillips II. It was sold at Home Depot, Lowes and other hardware stores. But because of some legal/ copyright issues they stopped making them. So contractors just bought what was new at home depot and Lowes, which is star bit or square bit. you cannot just grab a regular phillips screwdriver and take those out! This is why i only use these FastenMaster screws now. I put them in with a Dewalt drill gun. But if i don't happen to have it, i can use a regular screwdriver to get them in and out. and later if something needs to be repaired you can get these out easier than a star bit screw or a square bit screw. They do not sell these particular screws at Home Depot and Lowes anymore, but i have seen them at True value. But they are cheaper here on amazon. I will continue to only use phillips deck screws for everything i put together.

I have been in Afghanistan and have been nothing but making life easier for everyone by doing little things. I was using nails at first, but my father sent me some of these screws and they work amazing. They have not broke nor stripped and are holding up amazing.

I have used these screws in outdoor garden beds and planters, decking and fencing.

They drive easily and hold up well.

Not much else to say, these are great quality exterior wood screws.

I was sick and tired of the big box hardware store's lousy screws. Their heads always stripped (Phillips or otherwise) when the going got tough. These do not (and I've used a good 100 so far) and the bit supplied fits perfectly and it does not wear out. If you are tired of "Made in China" type, cheap headed screws, these will be different. Using a powerful battery operated driver and very happy!

Very pleased with the value and quality of these wood screws. Used them building a 16 X 16 work shop. I used my cordless impact driver and the bits that it comes with never slipped. I used almost 2 boxes and with 350 per box it is a GREAT price! They are perfect for exterior too. They have the coating on them.

these drove pretty good and i was able to remove them faily easy as well. but you do have to be careful as the heads are still pretty soft. it wouldnt be hard to mess them up. other that, i would rather have the self piloting tips on them to cut down on splits.

Good screws for decks or fencing. I'll be using this box primarily for fencing the back pasture. The deck screws I used previously lasted 10+ years with little corrosion and I expect the same from these.

I ordered a box of these under the impression they were identical to the Phillips II Plus screws that I've come to love. Amazon's close-up photo looks like a Phillips II Plus, but the FastenMaster screws I received don't match that photo. They look like a cheapened version of the Phillips.

The FastenMaster screws:
- have no identifying marks on the head.
- have ridges on the undersides of the heads, possibly a self-countersinking feature. The Phillips II Plus heads have smooth undersides, which is desirable when you need to mount metal or plastic to wood.
- don't have "stops" machined into them to stop your driver bit from getting wedged in too far.
- seem to have a thinner, less consistent coating. Which might be why they're darker in color. The Phillips II Plus are more yellowish.

In my experience, the self-countersinking heads seem to reduce clamping power. When trying to pull two softwood boards together, the screw head often just buries itself deeper and deeper without actually pulling the boards tight.

I'm sure these will work fine for most projects, but in the future I'll pay a little more for the quality of the Phillips brand.

The driver bits that come with both brands are identical in size and shape, and interchangeable.
