The comic strip TERRY AND THE PIRATES was brought to life in 1934 by Milt Caniff, who stayed with the syndicated franchise twelve years. "Terry..." continued until 1973 without Caniff (who'd gone on to create STEVE CANYON). "Terry and the Pirates" became a radio show in 1937, running eleven seasons. The TV program aired 18 episodes from June 26, 1953 to November 21, 1953. This collection contains 16 of these installments.

BASIC PLOT:
USAAF Col. Terry Lee goes to the Far East in search of an inherited goldmine. While there, Lee hires on as a pilot for Air Cathay, a cargo and passenger transport run by the somewhat dishonest Chopstick Joe. Terry's co-pilot is Hotshot Charlie, and Burma is his blonde girlfriend. Lee's nemesis is the beautiful and mysterious Dragon Lady.

I've watched a lot of television shows from the dawn of TV in the 40s to the present day. Some of them have been great, but most are barely worth the time spent watching. Terry and the Pirates sides with the former.

Terry and the Pirates was a short lived TV show from 1953. It was based on the popular comic strip by Milt Caniff who also created Steve Canyon after leaving Terry. Unlike Most shows from the 1950s which are simple and slow moving (including Steve Canyon also based on a comic strip by Milt Caniff), Terry and the Pirates is filled with interesting characters, exotic locals, and a variety of adventures. This collection contains 16 of the 18 episodes.

The show features Terry Lee and Hotshot Charlie, two pilots who work for Chopstick Joe, the owner of a transportation business Air Cathay who also deals in extra-legal transactions. Terry is the typical hero with a heart of gold and a moral compass that always points north. His co-piolot Charlie is the comic relief. Two other recurring characters are the Dragon Lady, head of a smuggling organization, and Burma, the pretty love interest. The stories all take place in post-WWII China.

There are only two things that could have made this set better. First, the video quality was poor. It looks like someone ripped an old VHS tape. Second, the last two episodes in the series are missing. Grrrr.

I highly recommend this to anyone who wants something worthwhile and entertaining to watch. It's appropriate for all ages both in content and in entertainment value. I loved it and can't wait to watch it again!

Great show from Boomer childhood. Black and white; occasionally (not often) the video is a little defective but they warn you of that at the beginning of an episode so affected.

Intended for kids in the early 1950s I guess but it has references to the Bretton Woods conference and other rather sophisticated topics that couldn't have meant much to the 5 to 10 year olds in the audience. The stories aren't half bad. The series takes place in postwar China (Tansan, Macao, et c.) though of course it was filmed in the US.

The language can be sophisticated at times. Hotshot Charlie is heard to say "From typhus people die you know." The Dragon Lady (DL) has the most consistently highbrow English ("That you could leave me here I could understand. But that you would believe I would be a party to this, I shall never forgive.") sometimes touhed with sarcasm ("The righteous one [the hero, Terry Lee] speaks in riddles.")

The music is appropriate and good.

And all the buzz topics of today are there: globalization (mention of the Bretton Woods conference, American employed abroad), diversity (two white American guys work for a Chinese boss); gender equality (a Chinese woman (the Dragon Lady) is a very formidable opponent, a little shady but with a heart).
