After Free split up in the early fall of 1971, Andy Fraser formed a project called Toby, while lead singer Paul Rodgers got involved with Peace. With Simon Kirke and Paul Kossoff being left, the two decided to form a project of their own with Japanese native Tetsu Yamauchi on bass and a young, budding keyboard player from Texas known as John "Rabbit" Bundrick. The resulting Kossoff, Kirke, Tetsu and Rabbit release remains an interesting footnote within the Free lifeline as this band of musicians would hook up again in the third and final incarnation of Free itself with the Heartbreaker release, but the music contained herein reveals an accomplished and solid effort on the parts of these fine players. Bundrick provides over half of the record's song length opening with Blue Grass and featuring him on vocals, this is driven by Kossoff's winding, sharp guitar tone, Kirke's solid powerful and steady beats along with Tetsu's fine bass accompaniment. Sammy's Alright follows and is a rather soulful number with nice harmonies interlaid as Kirke also reveals some solid singing to compliment Rabbit's lead vocals . Which leads to the next number Anna; a soft track of sorts sung by Simon and is a nice heartfelt tune, driven by Bundrick's tasteful piano lines. Just for the Box is an instrumental credited to Kossoff and shows off a great groove realized by the quartet turning in a solid jam performance. Hold On follows and is a hidden gem within this set, written by Kirke and Koss and although it starts out a bit slow, it builds itself rather organically further into its wonderful coda that contains some of Paul's best playing so far, driven along with Rabbit's purposeful piano lines.Read more ›

Free's main songwriters Andy Fraser and Paul Rodgers stopped talking, decided they couldn't stand each other and the band splintered due to stress and the impact of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. Drummer Simon Kirke and the late guitarist Paul Kossoff elected to continue on and this spin-off eventually became (with Paul Rodgers back on board) Free for the band's last album. While the album doesn't have material as strong as the songwriting of Fraser & Rodgers, "KKTR" is a fine album that mixes elements of the Free sound with the influence of The Band (not a surprise since they were an influence on Free's album "Highway" the one just before this).

What "KKTS" lacks is a strong singer. Rabbit and Kirke are adequate singers but can't match the golden pipes of Paul Rodgers or even Andy Fraser (who has a voice similar to Rodgers but without the range). The songwriting has a strong gospel vibe in addition to the influence of Free and The Band. Rabbit's vocals sound a bit like Levon Helm but not quite as distinctive.

The remaster sounds nice BUT its clear that No Noise was used on it which flattens out the sound of the album and leaves it with less depth, presence and softens detail. I haven't heard the other masters but I have heard the original vinyl. It's not quite as good as the vinyl but does sound decent. Fans of Free will want to pick this up because it is kind of an unoffical Free album since this entire line up ended up working with Rodgers on the band's last album.

Free is probably my all time favorite Rock and Roll Band. The vocals are weak on this album as are the songs Kossoff shines on a few songs but overall not a very good album. Back Street Crawler was a much better Band Kossoff's next Band, especially after the initial Back Street Crawler album of that title.

"Kossoff, Kirke, Tetsu, Rabbit" is a fine musical souvenir from another era... when splinter groups from fractured rock bands were snapped up eagerly and promoted by major labels.

In this case, the group that imploded was "Free", a band that is a sentimental favorite for many old codgers like myself simply because although it was a band that rocked hard, its defining virtues were great restraint and understatement. If the Beach Boys epitomized the early 60's and Southern California ambience, Free was the band that most accurately reflected the bittersweet life of the typical early 70's longhaired guy: stoned, and a little self-pitying, but ready for the next adventure.

KKTR didn't equal the best records of Free, but they provided an interesting footnote. Texan-bred keyboardist John "Rabbit" Bundrick had traveled clear to England specifically to work with Free, only to find it no longer existed. But 50% of the band was better than nothing, and guitarist Paul Kossoff and drummer Simon Kirke were more than willing to make a record. Japanese bass player Tetsu Yamiuchi was added as a replacement for Andy Fraser.

Bundrick was forced to act as lead vocalist for KKTR, and he was clearly no match for Paul Rodgers. Still, his material approximated the laid back friendliness of the Fraser/Rodgers team, and his keyboard wizardry provided something fresh and new. The results sound a bit like Free, salted with bits of Traffic, Elton John, Steely Dan, and Texas honky-tonk.

Paul Kossoff plays very strong lead guitar accompaniment throughout, and Simon Kirke is solid as ever on drums. The only indication that Kossoff was suffering from any personal deterioration was his song, "Colours", which is a very strange (but affecting) tune.
