This is a great putty - if used for the purpose for which it was designed. Just as you wouldn't use paint thinner to clean up latex paint, you don't use Minwax Wood Putty if you want a filler that dries hard and can be sanded and stained.

Minwax Wood Putty is designed to fill holes and cracks in finished wood, either where you will be applying another coat of finish, or where you can't sand the wood filler without damaging the surrounding finish.

I have used this type of putty for 35 years. As a hardwood flooring contractor, I use the putty to fill cracks and nail holes in wood floors after the first coat of polyurethane and before applying the second coat. The finish holds the putty in the floor. I also use it to fill nail holes in pre-finished baseboard and other trim. It is easy to apply - you form a small ball of the putty between your thumb, forefinger and index finger, and rub it into the nail hole or crack. Then you wipe the area clean of the oily haze with a rag or paper towel. The putty does dry and harden somewhat over time. (Anyone who has removed the seal from a container of putty and come back to use the putty again after 6 months or so - even though you put the lid back on - knows that it dries and hardens to a degree that makes it no longer usable.) As it dries, it also develops a slightly shiny patina which helps it blend in with the finish on the trim.

So, if your expectation is that everything that is called wood filler or wood putty can be used for the same range of applications, then you will probably be quite disappointed with this product (as many of the other reviews illustrate). But if you need a putty that will do those things I described above, you will be pleased with Minwax Wood Putty.

I was getting so tired of all that stupid wood filler that dried hard and kept chipping out of my floor as the temperature changed. Thank God someone still makes WOOD PUTTY that is a putty that is a non-drying flexible putty, that stays soft like putty, and can be smeared into gaps like a soft flexible putty. This putty doesn't get hard like filler; it stays soft like putty (hence the name - PUTTY). Putty cool stuff.

I am a cabinet maker and have used this product with much success. I saw so many negative reviews here that I felt I had to come to it's defense. This product does exactly what it's meant to do. I have been filling my face frame nail holes after I apply the final finish, which is faster and easier to do than filling the holes with a filler and then having to sand them before finishing. The holes disappear and you can purchase other colors to blend for a perfect match. Nice product !

I bought this product to fill screw holes in a window frame that remained after removing mini-blinds. It was easy to apply and matched the color of the surrounding wood very well. Not perfect - but much, much better than the holes that were there. Clean up requires a damp paper towel.

It's WOOD PUTTY people, not WOOD FILLER.

As stated on the front of the container: "Fills NAIL HOLES and covers other minor imperfections in STAINED AND FINISHED wood."

It works perfect for that. Why all the negative reviews??

I guess I should have read the instructions before I bought the product. It never gets hard! I'm still trying to figure out what use there would be for a wood filler that never gets hard. Even Playdoh gets hard. Maybe I'm missing something. Stupid me. I bought two different shades to match my darker wood projects. Now I'm staring at the nice jars, wondering what to do with them.

Looking for HELP from experienced painters!! Well, I love this stuff I but bought it a year ago while refinishing an old table - without seeing the non-hardening but it worked great. Now I filled in many cracks around our 1926 fireplace and the bookcases, used a sponge to blend and viola'! Looks great. But now I am afraid to paint. I noticed I had to dig down into the jar because of the crust, so I am assuming it will be okay as we won't be banging the areas but has anyone used paint over the non-dried material or should I wait a month? I would REALLY APPRECIATE knowing if I should just start over with the pink stuff that turns white. My husband was out of town when I dove into this project, poor guy has done so much remodeling including putting in a spiral staircase and it seems every time I try to help I make more work.

I tried multiple fillers in some finish-screw holes in cabinets I made. All filled the holes but none stained to match, leaving ugly blemishes in the finish. This one blended almost invisibly; you don't notice it even when looking directly at it. Quick and easy to use. Saved major labor.
