This is a great base OD/distortion pedal. Open it up and replace the stock 12AX7 tube with a 12AU7 tube (I used JJ Tesla). Far far better distortion OD. I tried lots of different tube types even used 12AE7 (meant for 12V plate operation). Generally, what I found is that the lower gain factor tube types work really well with these type of pedals; 12AU7 was by far the best. Now, that's information you'll not easily find! Enjoy it.

This is a great sounding pedal - I was shocked when I went into a store asking about a good marshall-esque distortion pedal and they pointed to this gem. I was looking at $200 pedals, and kept asking about the expensive ones and they kept pointing me to the $75 pedal - fine, I'll try it. I am glad I did. The store had several and they all sounded different, which is clearly attributed to the variations in the generic tubes that ship with them. Buy one on Amazon and grab yourself a handful of spare 12AX7s (or any compatible tube) and go to town until you find one you like. I ended up with a Jan-Phillips 12AX7WA in mine which gives it a great over the top marshall sound - good and grindy. I had two different Jan-Phillips and one sounded so-so while the other was defined and clear. So, working through several different tubes is important to make this pedal work for you - it will be worth the time spent.

I recently switched back to guitar after moving to bass for a few years. Unfortunately most of my old guitar gear was traded off in an effort to piece together a solid bass rig. Which now left me in the position of trying to make my old back up amp (a Peavey Valve King head) compete with our other guitarists Mesa Triple Rectifier. This pedal was just what i needed. The amp went from thin and treble-y to chest thumping palm mutes in seconds. I traded out the Sylvania 12ax7 for a Tung Sol and couldn't be happier with the purchase. Within the first few minutes, I was able to dial in a tone somewhere between a JCM and Triple Rec. with no trouble at all.

FYI this and the Vintage Time Machine pedal (the Memory Man copy) are manufactured in Germany and not some third world country. And both are definitely worth the money.

I have heard them all... every sort of distortion pedal from the cheapest, to the widely proliferated, to the outrageously overpriced high-end Boutique "all tube analog jesus christ in a box".

This pedal need bow it's metaphorical head to no one.

This review is written on an out of the box version of the pedal, I have not upgraded the tube, no at some point in the future I likely will purchase other tubes just to see how they sound.

Long story short, this paddle gives you the gain stage of a hot rodded Marshall amplifier. (Tonally) Pick your poison, be it NWOBHM, Ozzy Era Zakk Wylde, Randy Rhoads and dozens of other tones that made heavy metal great. You will find it.

My target sound, is the punchy snarl of an overdriven Marshall. It is here and it sounds huge.

But wait, theres's more....

If you dial it down, you can play anything, blues to jazz to classic rock, and very low gain settings it serves to fantastically just warm up the signal of a clean guitar.... or vocals for that matter.

A couple unexpected bonuses:

-Heavy duty construction, all metal case.
-included 9v power supply. (RAD!)
- a built in 3 band EQ let's you have it your way.
- the built-in noise gate, can render this beast dead quiet at the highest gain settings. Pedalboard space comes at a premium, and this one will allow you to entirely eliminate a noise gate. And of course the noise gate is switchable, so if you want the squeals and other heartwarming noise associated with a tube amplifier, you can keep them.

And best of all, I paid $50 for this pedal. It almost isn't fair.

I use several Behringer products (amps & pedals). I got this one last week and really hated the sound. The OD was WAY too harsh starting at level 1!

Lots of settings and tones, though. I changed out the tube for an Electro Harmonix 12AY7 and it sounds MUCH better. Don't expect "true" tube sound. It is, after all, only 1 preamp tube. It does give a "tube-like" OD sound, though. Close, but not exact. Good enough and built solid.

I was all ready to ship it back, but I'm now keeping it.

This would be an awesome, to die for kind of overdrive pedal if the drive stage had some variation to it...it goes from nothing to "holy sh*t" in almost no time! Granted, the grind this pedal produces is definitely* musical sounding, but for subtle applications, it's just too much of a good thing. I'm still gonna keep it though...it's a cool counterpoint to my reissue Big Muff pi! Different tubes did produce smoother tone, but no less over-overdrive...I wound up with an Electro-Harmonics 12AT7EH in it, and it sounds better than the generic tube it comes with. Maybe a 12AU7 could cut back on the grindage level? Who knows, guess that'll be my next move...or I might try one of the mod kits out there. Can't beat it for the price, the EQ is actually very responsive and helps make this usable as a very dirty sounding bass preamp too...I'm one of those guys that loves to try weird stuff to get a great sound from my bass rig!

UPDATE 03/09/2016...Well, I've had this pedal for about 2 1/2 years now, and I've grown to love it's idiosyncrasies...the over the top overdrive has given my reissue Big Muff pi the boot from my guitar pedalboard (it was really quite redundant, and I only needed 1 HUGE metal box on my board lol), I've learned how to tweak the EQ to maximum effect, and I'm even farting around with the noise gate...a feature I truly felt no need for at first, but have since discovered its value! I never did venture into the mod kit world, because the design as it came from Behringer is pretty killer in its own right!
