Thomas "Fats" Waller was certainly one of the most gifted practitioners of the stride piano style. A disciple and pupil of the great James P. Johnson, Fats was a prodigy early on and was as much at home on a theater organ, pipe organ, or Hammond B-3 as he was on piano. During the early thirties, he was a much sought after studio musician appearing as accompanist or session piano player with his own pickup groups like the "Buddies" or the McKinney Cotton Pickers New York incarnation. Later, as documented by these 4 cd's, he worked with his own group, Fats Waller and his Rhythm. These sessions were recorded for Victor and released on both Victor "Scroll" as well as the budget Bluebird label throughout his recording career - one which ended tragically with his premature death in 1943 at the age of 39.
This series of 6 box sets compiles all of Fats' studio work for Victor up to his passing. This series was a project that the late John R.T. Davies had championed, but did not begin before his untimely passing. The project was brought to fruition by Davies' protege, Ted Kendall, and what a superb job he has done. The sad fact of Fats' legacy is that he was often a victim of his own success blending majestic pianism and lighthearted humor. Fats' playing with lyrics was legendary and his commercial success more or less "type-cast" him as a musical jester of sorts. The unfortunate result was that he was often given second rate material to record. This was a fate that befell many great artists - Billie Holiday comes to mind - she had to not only deal with some truly awful songs, but she had to record them in ARC's torture chamber at 1776 Broadway. Who was to blame for these often silly and puerile offerings? Eli Oberstein, Victor's A&R man, or Ed Kirkeby, his manager - who can say.

Before buying this CD I knew many Fats Waller compositions and wanted to check out more, but was unfamiliar with most of Waller's work and wasn't sure where to start.

Waller recorded prolifically so there is a lot of his work available on CD. I decided to start with this JSP set because I've bought several JSP box sets in the past and been happy with them.

I've very happy with this one. This is four CDs of first rate 1930s jazz. The re-mastering is good and the overall sound is good, although the levels seem a bit low on some tracks, requiring the volume to be turned up a bit on the player.

Fats Waller was a major figure in 20th century music history. The material on this CD is excellent and easily stands the test of time. If you'd like to check out Fats Waller's music but are unsure of where to start, I'd suggest starting here.

He sounds like he's just having a good time, playing, singing, and kibbitzing with the listener. He makes music that sounds like he was born at the piano bench. Even the cuts with a band behind him have that same exuberance and joy. As this is the only one of the sets I have, I can't compare this period in Waller's career to other periods. I don't know if he's at "the peak of his powers" during this set. And when it comes to the sound, I have to say it's as good as any of the Mosaic sets I have featuring music from the 1930s. The only criticism I have, and it may just be me, but sometimes it's hard to listen to a whole disk in one sitting, as there is not much change of mood. Even the sad songs have are fun and happy underneath.

All in all though, I do recommend this set highly.
