Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

It's not getting old yet, is it? Boston Red Sox fans who bought every shard of memorabilia from the magical season of 2004 could be forgiven for budgeting for the 2007 postseason with a more seasoned eye, but the basic keepsake remains: this official DVD boxed set including every pitch of the World Series against the Colorado Rockies as well as the three final ALCS wins against the Indians (combined score: 40-5). Many fans will wish the first four Indians games were included as well: the pleasure of a win is only increased by watching the struggle it took to get there. But the big moments are here: Josh Beckett's door-slamming performances in game 5 of the ALCS and game 1 of the Series, J.D. Drew's $14 Million Grand Slam, the endless rookie heroics, Jon Lester's shutout innings to sweep the Series, and Mike Lowell's MVP performance.

The format of the DVD collection will be familiar to many fans by now: the game-only Fox broadcasts, set up so you can jump to any half-inning you want, along with a bonus DVD of season highlights, postgame celebrations (yes, including the Papelbon Dance), and interviews, all packaged in info-rich sleeves full of stats and facts. And the best new feature of the year is a boon to anyone who'd prefer to relive the victories without having to invite Tim McCarver and Joe Buck back into their homes: for the World Series games you can choose to switch the audio track over to the Sox (or Colorado Rockies) radio broadcast. Nothing says New England baseball like the voice of Joe Castiglione, especially when he's announcing that Lenora Bevola of Sandwich is that night's contestant for the Mass State Lottery. --Tom Nissley

3.0 out of 5 stars MLB gets it wrong again, November 11, 2007
By downtown (Malden, MA USA) - See all my reviews
MLB has an unfortunate tendency to give the customers what they want us to have, rather than what we really want.

In 2004, they gave Sox fans a "complete" DVD set from the ALCS and World Series. But where was the ALDS? Most Sox fans probably would have paid extra for those three exciting games, had they been available. Once again, MLB has come up short with their "complete" DVD set: you get the anti-climactic 2007 World Series, but only the last three games of the ALCS. Why only a fraction of a series? Why only games 5-7? Just because, it would seem. Want to see Josh Beckett's dominating performance in Game 1 against Cleveland? Too bad, MLB didn't deem it worthy of inclusion.

This collection isn't bad, it's exactly what it advertises itself as. But it could have been so much better.

2.0 out of 5 stars ALCS....minus Games 1, 2, 3 & 4 Plus all four World Series Games, November 10, 2007
I'm going to have to think long and hard before buying this set. I really enjoyed the 2004 version because it had statistics for each game on the DVD cover and included the first four games.

Why would a decision be made to exlude four games from the ALCS? Sure the price is $40 cheaper, but I would have paid $40 more to have all seven games.

This decision gives me the feeling that somebody who is not a fan of baseball made this decision, because any true fan of the sport would have prefered all seven games instead of just three.

So essentially I'll only see one game of Josh Beckett's outstanding/dominating performance in the ALCS. I'll miss the first Curt Schilling game. I'll also miss Dice-K and Wakefield's performance. Yeah, the last three lost their games (Schilling actually had a ND) but that's what makes an exciting series exciting.

I certainly HOPE somebody changes their mind and releases all SEVEN games. Otherwise...what's the point?!?!

1.0 out of 5 stars Wait a while..., December 3, 2007
By Christine Murphy "catmommy99" (Malden, MA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
...because if you recall, the FULL 2004 WS set came out AFTER the ring ceremony, which took place at Fenway Park in April 2005. The ring ceremony was on that set.

I bet that MLB puts out a more complete set after the ring ceremony in 2008. They seem to be putting this one out now, quickly, to sell DVDs before Christmas. Be patient, hold off, and perhaps we'll see a superior set later on.

So I'll be holding off in the hope of seeing this. I waited long enough to see the Sox win the WS the first time in 2004...I can wait for a better 2007 WS box set!
