As a law student at Gottingen University, German born Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-1792) published an influential treatise on the adaptation of the Sturm und Drang literary movement to music. Persuaded by a fellow classmate to apply for a position in the Swedish court orchestra, he remained in the service of King Gustav III until the monarch’s death. There he seized the opportunity to compose the type of music he had earlier envisioned.

Trained as a violinist, Kraus’s skill translates perfectly in his massive Violin Concerto in C Major, most likely penned in 1777. Structured in the traditional 3 movement format, it exceeds most contemporary concertos in size, in scope and in sheer length being over 30 minutes long on this recording. The leisurely ‘Allegro moderato’ features paired flutes and horns, with the silvery flutes adding lovely ornamentation above the extended orchestral intro as well as echoing the violin’s lines once the single string enters. Wandering into the upper reaches of the E string, the soloist exhibits a sweet, if somewhat thin tone as she navigates the extensive double stops and virtuosic passage work with ease.

Scored without winds, the tender ‘Adagio’ is characterized by a tactile vibrato in the violin as the shimmering strings fade in and out of near silence. The final cadenza in this gorgeous 2nd movement showcases that luscious vibrato while playing sustained double stops, a truly stunning section. A genial ‘Rondo’ closes the work. The triple metered finale starts easily enough, sliding into brief moments of minor keyed melancholy before the energetic violin powers the concerto to a rewarding conclusion.

The only Sturm und Drang work on the CD is the foreboding Overture to the tragic “Olympie” from 1791.

A truly remarkable collection from a little known composer. The complete KRAUS collection also includes symphonies, sonatas, piano compositions and string quartets.
