I am elderly and have a really heavy double-pained glass and metal framed window in the back storage room that gets heavier to lift for closing with each advancing year. When it is closed in the up position and the position locks are released It wants to drop like a rock, all the way to the bottom position. I'm gradually losing the strength to manage it with weather changes and knew I had to do something to make it manageable when I get too old to lift it. I ordered this little winch and rigged a small cable, block, tackle, and pulley system, using a narrow but strong woven steel cable to wind the window up and down. With this little windlass I can now raise and lower the window easily and safely with just one finger. ... PROBLEM SOLVED ! ... This little windlass has a lever brake that engages and releases the cogs easily, regardless of the strain, and can be used to lock the unit at any hoist position. It cannot release totally for a free fall but must be released and manually wound down, a safety feature. It is "beefy" and rated at a max of 600 pounds load, but limited to 300 pounds load if lifting humans. (a company liability disclaimer).

This winch is probably great for natural or nylon ropes, but the hub is only about a 1/2" in diameter. This causes a pretty large strength reduction for the 1/4" wire rope I used with it. Reese indicates that a different winch (with a 1.75" hub) should be used used for wire rope in the instructions. Search the internet to find advice on how much the 1/2" hub radius will reduce the strength of your wire-rope.

The ratchet only acts in one direction.

It is still a good winch for the price.

I found no downside for this purchase. It's well made and everything disassembles. And get this...MADE IN USA. How many things can you say that about!? I used mine to raise and lower a large pole mounted birdfeeder. This unit was the compact size I was looking for. I will say it handles my feeder like it's not even there and I have it strung with 3/32" wire rope. Great winch.

Bought this winch as the lift mechanism for my one man keg lifter. A 1/2 barrel of beer weighs approximately 160 pounds and with the lift that I build one person can easily lift the keg into a top load keg-o-rader. This lift works exceptionally well lifting up and is very smooth and easy to control going down. Perfect for the application.

Picked this one for a medical need (building a device to better workout my frozen shoulder (from a bad rotator cuff tear shoulder repair). Using the normally proscribed pulley system to work the arm was causing as much damage to my other arm/shoulder as it was helping my surgically repaired one. This, plus the "Generic Rope Pulley Block and Tackle" by JABETC, make lifting my fifth wheel hitch and generator into the back of my pickup truck a breeze. Aint getting any younger and finding it harder to find helpers that want to help me lift a 100# item. I mounted this winch to my bench and the B&T to the ceiling of my garage. No problems lifting them now. BTW, I have storage trusses on my garage, so I (220#) can walk around in the attic, so there was no concern about lifting things that small.
