Great Knife!!!

I love the outdoors(hunting,fishing,camping,hiking,scuba diving) just being away from city noise. The sog E37T pup elite is always at my side. It maybe alittle small for lager hands, but hence the name "pup". I consider my hands to be large and I have no problems or discomfort. Comes sharp and stays sharp. The blade is well balanced making it a joy to use. The black TiNi coating will chip but thats to be expected(only if your using it right). The handle has a good texture and makes it hard to let go even when wet. The shealth is ok, but I cant think of one I liked anyway. It holds the knife and has a extra poket for a wet stone or small compass etc.

The elite is well worth the extra $$$ over the original sog pup. Elite has an aus8 blade over the standard sog pup with a aus6(aus8 stays sharper longer).

I also have the Gerber LMF II Infantry. I pack both knifes with me, and I find myself always reaching for the pup. The Gerber LMF II Infantry is a great knife but its bigger than most of the jobs you need performed when camping,hiking etc.. Sog pup is over looked and should be given more credit. If its good enough for the navy and MARINES its good enough for a wana be surviver man.

Great knife for many uses

SOG has made some smart improvements to this Pup over their previous model, most notably for me being the deeper finger grooves and more rigid scoring on the handle, making it easier to grip in both wet and dry conditions. The blade is also a bit heftier, it seems, and SOG has added a blade spine rasp. It's simply a more well-rounded incarnation.

This is a very tough, very well-balanced knife that is suitable for a multitude of uses around the house or in the field. So if you're looking for an affordable fixed blade knife that's not too big but can easily hang with the performance of larger, pricier knives, this will be a very nice fit for you.

This knife is a great camp knife.

I have the plain blade version with a nylon sheath instead of the kydex. My preferences for the plain blade and nylon sheath are based on the ease of resharpening the simpler profile and the extra pocket for a small sharpening stone and cigarette lighter found on the nylon sheath. Some people prefer the partially serreated for cutting cord and thick fabric. There is rasping on the back of the blade that could be used to notch small limbs for building a improvised shelter or something. I haven't found use for them yet, but I have had fun rasping notches into small branches. Maybe that would help when making a splint after you twist your ankle or whatever you might do.

The knife is light, but not flimsy. I have found that this is a great size. A very small knife might be more packable and a big knife should handle bigger jobs. But with that being said, I have found this knife straps easily to my backpack shoulder strap's molle type webbing (another plus with the nylon sheath), out of the way but accessible, and I have never had a job this knife wouldn't do. I suppose that means SOG has found the perfect size to balance convenience and utility.

The checkering on the grip gives excellent retention in hand and the handle profile has perfect ergonomics for my medium sized hands. Seriously, the finger grooves feel like the were designed for my hand. There is also a larnyard hole on the handle which is a feature I like. I'm not normally in a situation where dropping my knife would be a big problem, but it can happen and an extra foot or so of 550 para cord could always end up being usefull.

I haven't abused this knife, so I can't talk about what it can survive.Read more ›

Good Knife

I bought this knife to carry on the boat. I am a crew member on a Coast Guard Aux boat. The Elite has a heavier (thicker) blade.It is one tough knife. My only complaint was the nylon sheath. I bought hard sheath to replace it.

It would make a good survival knife. I have a seal knife also. It was too big to carry on the boat. The pup is just a smaller version of the seal knife. With the hard sheath, I would give it five stars. The nylon sheath is what it is.

Don't mess with this

I have handled SOG knives before, so I knew what I was buying. Still, when I pulled the blade out of the box it just conformed to my hand. That's when you know a knife is the right one for you. The only other company I've found that is really good at that is Benchmade, but they tend to be rather pricey. After looking at a ton of different fixed blades I decided on the SEAL Pup and I don't regret it in the slightest. Don't mind the price tag, especially when Amazon sells it for far less than MSRP. If there's one thing I have learned in my ten years in wilderness education it's that the price doesn't matter if the gear is going to do the best job. This blade is no exception. If you want something solid that won't fail on you when you need it most, buy this knife. You won't have a second thought about it.

Lives up to the hype.

Having owned this knife for almost one year now, I definitely understand why the SEAL Pup Elite is such a fan favorite.

Although there are better knifes out there, the SEAL Pup Elite meets all my requirements for a low maintenance, versatile, tactical knife. The flat edge of the blade came hair shaving sharp from the factory, and the serrated parts were just as keen.

Now AUS-8A is not as tough as 1095, for example, however it is fantastic for those who want a strong semi-stainless blade that doesn't require much attention. It gets nice and sharp, holds an edge better than 440C, and you don't have to worry about it rusting...even in salt water thanks to SOG's surprisingly resilient black TiNi finish. I didn't bother trying to baton with my knife, because of the serrations, but I have put a lot of torque on it in various situations and it hasn't shown any signs of failing.

The grippy rubber handle is awesome, with a great feel in the hand in both dry and wet conditions. It is also surprisingly tough, it still looks new! It is by far my favorite knife handle.

The nylon sheath is well made, it secures the knife well, and the MOLLE attachments make it easy to attach to just about any backpack. The little front pocket is a great spot for a little multi-tool, flashlight, or compact sharpener.

Overall, I couldn't be happier. It doesn't replace my bushcraft and batoning knifes, but it is my go-to for all other non-culinary cutting tasks.
