Great value.You get a good ,light, action rod .A perfectly functioning (plastic) reel,2 wet flies,fly-line and a leader. Ideal for learner/beginner or in my case an old veteran fisherman. You can easily replace the reel with a better model should you wish later. The rod has a nice even action and I was surprised at how good it reacted. Make sure to buy your own Flies before using it(As all flies are local and seasonal). I would recommend this .

I wanted to learn to fly fish for some time and didn't want to break the bank doing so. After all, I didn't know if I would like it/be any good at it. I purchased this knowing that no matter what happened, I would not be using this for life.

I've used this at least 5 times now and I can say that I absolutely love fly fishing. There are lots of cons to this rod and reel, but ultimately, it has helped me transition into a really fun hobby.

So let's review:

-The flies that they give you are pure garbage. Don't disrespect the fish by presenting these flies to them, just throw them away. Never having fly fished before, I could tell the quality was terrible. The "wings" on one of them fell off rather quickly. My only recommendation in using these is to cut the barb off and just use it to practice casting in the yard.

-Casting can be rough. After using mine, which my buddy (who got me into it and fly fishes 24/7) claims "feels like casting with a broomstick", he let me cast off of his Sage rod. Let me tell you, night and day. It was so much more fluid. I certainly won't be getting a Sage anytime soon but I know that the CR rod is definitely subpar. The rod does, fairly frequently, come undone (where you piece it in). This can be a nuisance at times.

-The reel is nothing special, but it works. One thing I don't care for is how loud the clicking noise is. It is possible to "turn them off" but then it messes with the drag system.

-The leader is junk. It maintains memory pretty easily.

So even with all that being said, it is possible to catch fish using this setup. You can learn how to get your cast down and have some fun along the way. I would certainly recommend this for a beginner.Read more ›

This was just the product at a good price to get me interested in fly fishing. You will outgrow it in a couple of weeks though. Can't beat the price, but you do indeed get what you pay for. The reel is plastic, and I broke it when I...um...fell into the river. It does not come with backing, which is fine for beginners.

A good enough starter kit for both my grandsons 11 & 10 - people like to trash talk alot about cheap reels etc. - well BS - a fly reel is only a place to store line when you're not wading a small stream and catching fish! This is perfect starter for both of them.

I wanted to have a third spare rod available at my cabin, and morbid curiosity got the better of me on this one. Could you actually buy a working fly combo for less than $20 ???

The short answer is......yes. This outfit functions ..... meaning you can cast a fly out , retrieve it, draw a strike, set the hook, and possibly even land the fish with it. On a fundamental level, it works , which is pretty incredible considering the price point .

However, it would be a very poor choice for a beginning fly-fisherman who was looking to purchase their first fly outfit , mostly due to the fact that it comes with a level fly line, which is challenging to cast when compared to the tapered flyline that is almost always standard equipment on even the cheapest fly fishing combos. Plus, the rod itself is only 8' long, which is another handicap for the beginning caster. Also , there is no backing line on the reel , which is a basic , necessary component on any fly outfit....especially on a reel like this that has a very crude, ineffective drag system .

Seriously , Cabela's sells their "Cahill" series starter combo for <$50 , and that outfit is 10x better than this one , for only 2x the money....a much better value, and much more user friendly for a beginning fly fishing enthusiast. There are several other combo outfits available on Amazon that retail for under <$50 that would smash this thing on any head-to-head comparisons. But if $20 is the non-negotiable budget, this combo actually has a chance to git'er done , as unbelievable as that may seem.Read more ›

Not the best rod on the market but you cannot beat the price.

I took this thing out last weekend and it worked great.

Cons
-However the Fly Line is not tapered which makes it a bit harder to cast.

-Does not come with a tippet or backing for your fly line. (although these are not absolutely necessary)

Tip
-Make sure to assemble your rod very tightly, after whipping the rod around a few times the pieces can come loose and fly apart.
