My daughter recently started riding lessons & a helmet was the first item on our list to purchase in preparation for lessons. I'm REALLY glad I went to a local store & had her try on this helmet!! With the horse graphic on the helmet, I was certain it was geared towards children (and it IS if you go to Troxel's website!). At 8 years old, the size small falls off her head - even with the straps & dial tightened all the way. Her head measures approximately 19.5 - 20".

The sales person directed us to the Troxel Legacy helmet instead, which fits her well in a size small. We still have to tighten the chin strap as far as it will go, but it's secure on her head & will stay on as intended if put to the test. http://www.amazon.com/Troxel-Legacy/dp/B0016SRB3Y

Measure your child's head & line it up with Troxel's size chart! You can find their sizing on the specific helmet's product page & then select the 'Specifications' tab. Below is the sizing for the Spirit helmet:

We bought this helmet for our 4 year old who is taking riding lessons. Bought one Troxel helmet previously for our other child in a local riding shop and paid a fortune for it. Glad to see Amazon had the same quality helmets at a much better price and it was shipped quickly. Also, had to contact the manufacturer with a few questions and they were very responsive and helpful. Would definitely recommend this product.

I just LOVE this helmet. It's easy to wear and lightweight and doesn't make my head sweat. The dial in the back is the BEST! I'm so glad I went for the Spirit. It's weird because it seems like my head is slightly a different size everytime I ride!!! It's nice to have that dial.

The style, which you can't tell from looking at the picture, is very high profile, large, and bubble-like. Not that riding helmets should be a fashion statement, but it made my head look way over sized. However, quality and price can't be beat.

I got the helmet within a couple of days of ordering it, but I had to return it. I am petite but with a big head, and this helmet just looks too big on me, even though it's a large, and it was still a bit tight on my head. Excellent quality, though. Would be better suited for smaller heads.

By far the BEST riding helmet I've ever had. It's lightweight and seems cooler (more ventilation holes certainly) than the others. But, more importantly, provides protection to the lower part of the back of the head. While this added protection may seem unimportant to most, it isn't to me. I had a recent accident while wearing a 'typical' accident and hit my head on a rock at the back of my head where there is no protection. I had a resulting concussion and a gash that needed 12 staples.
