Being an office product junkie, I leaped at the chance to try the Smead super tab folders in assorted colors. For me the colors are more useful for location and filing than are the tabs, whether regular tabs or the super sized tabs. In my file cabinet I eventually learn the colors and recognize yellow as my Subaru color and red as the credit card statements folder.

What about these folders? In front of me at this very moment are two folders, one a new SuperTab and the other a regular tab folder pulled out of my filing cabinet. I notice that both folders are about he same width, but the SuperTab's body is noticeably shorter.Both folder types are the same size at the tabs. I brought a handful of the SuperTabs to work thinking I'd impress my coworkers; none seemed impressed. Our office manager noted that the SuperTabs weren't as rigid as our work folders and that the SuperTab wasn't really an advantage in locating files because the larger label isn't entirely visible anyway with papers in the folder blocking the view.

For those who require larger file labels because of the nature of the items filed or the variety of items filed in one folder, these larger tabbed folders might be useful. For this Potato Head there's not much to choose between the two designs, though I do prefer the folders with the fuller bodies.

Of the four colors (red, green, blue, yellow) in this box of folders yellow is definitely my favorite. The yellow is bright and vivid and grabs one's attention is a sea of muted blues and greens. At least 10% of these folders is made from recycled content.

There are colorful tabbed file folders, made of stiff cardboard and of reasonable quality. The box includes a variety of colors, including red, blue, yellow and green. I use them to keep my papers organized. The fact that they're different colors, and bright colors at that, is especially useful. It's harder to lose them in the mess of my office. Also, my daughter uses them for her craft projects (making "magazines") and they work fine for that as well. In general, there isn't a whole lot to say about these folders. They do what they're supposed to do, and do it quite well. As such, they're recommended.

SuperTab? Not quite.

Seventeen syllables can tell you only so much. Now for the rest of the story.

The "See the Difference" graphic in Amazon's Product Description is misleading. A good chunk of that larger SuperTab area is below the so-called paper line. Some marketing guru cheated the SuperTab folder on the left <UP> in an attempt to make the tab seem taller compared to the file folder on the right. A truthful comparison would show the top edges equal, the tab on the left thus appearing larger only because its space extends into the domain of the file folder below. In other words, if you use all of the SuperTab area to write in (after all, Smead encourages you to "write bigger, print bigger labels or have more lines of description") and then you place standard size paper in the file folder (you would be expected to do so, these being "letter size" file folders), you will *not* be able to see everything you had written on the tab. Oops! Did the manufacturer forget to test these, or is the "SuperTab" claim pure snake oil? Not only that, it looks worse aesthetically, and offers less privacy, to have portions of documentation showing through.

But wait, there's more. Not only is the front of the folder cut to make the tab appear larger, but so, too, is the overall (non-tabbed) horizontal height of the back of the folder reduced: by approximately 3/8", compared to some other brands (and perhaps even compared to Smead's standard non-SuperTab file folders). What a great solution to taking the boring out of sorting and filing. Two hundred colorful folders! Pure heaven for someone who procrastinates until the cats start knocking the piles over. A different color for each category.

If the information you needed on a file folder tab was more than there was room for, the Smead SuperTab Folders are the answer to your problem. The folders are fairly heavy and should, in most cases, hold up well. The different colors are excellent, visible cues to different categories of your pertinent information. I use the green (i.e. the color of money) folders for banking and investment information; red for credit cards (no explanation necessary);blue for my husband's files and yellow for my own. The bright colors stand out in our crowded file drawers. Like other folders, if I jam too much into these folders, they "disappear" and the tabs become impossible to read.

The Smead SuperTab Folders are constructed from a fairly sturdy oaktag-type material. One should be able to use them for an extended period of time. There is plenty of room for the necessary information, if only it were easy to read. However, because these folders are bold colors it is harder to read headings written directly on the tab. It would have been better if Smead had included white, stick-on labels that fit the tab so consumers did not have to purchase those separately.

Had labels been included with this product, I would have rated it a five-star item. However, because they were not, I felt the brightly colored folders made it difficult to read writing directly on the folder and deducted a star. Further, these folders are fairly expensive, so unless you are somewhat compulsive about organizing your files, standard beige file folders are a better use of your resources.
