This remote is a steal!, June 22, 2009
What a great little remote! I was finally finished assembling my dream home theater system and struggled with handling 6 different remotes, because the Denon AVR remote is useless when it comes to programming. Somebody on the Denon boards suggested to check out the Sony remote and I ordered it right away, thinking it wouldn't be much loss if it didn't work. Plus, I was hesitant to shell out between $70 and 300 for one of the "universal" remotes, all of which have dozens of frustrated reviews about not being able to do what the user needs or having to look up codes online etc.
I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that it took very little effort to program the basic features into it (the first two pages of the manual tell you 90% of what you need to know!!), but also allowed for all of the advanced features to be programmed in. If you are looking for an easy to use remote, which doesn't require a PhD (I have one, but didn't need it ;-> ) and doesn't break the bank, run out and buy it!!
It probably helped me that I have both a Sony TV and Sony SACD DVD player, I found those codes in the manual's listing on first try. The Denon receiver took four attempts before I got the right code and, of course, my Sony Vaio Home Theater PC wasn't even listed. Not a problem, though - I simply used the learning feature to program the functions in, which takes about 10 minutes for 15-20 features. I can now control my Vaio Windows PC and its Media Center functions.
As one reviewer stated, I use the volume pass-through feature to have the volume controls available, regardless of source (which means you don't have to program those in for each device) and I used the four macro buttons to configure one-touch access for the most common actions (watch TV, watch DVD, watch PC, all off).
I like the balance and feel of the remote. Some of the frequently used buttons like Guide, Menu, Exit could be a little larger, but the remote is very light and you can almost balance it on the tip of your index finger, which leaves the thumb to reach the macro and other buttons.
This is really how remotes need to be done: simple, easy to program, surprisingly good manual, which is almost unnecessary beyond page 2 and all at a very affordable price. It baffles me to see $300 remotes that have 1-star ratings. Knowing Sony, however, I'm sure they are oblivious to the performance of this remote...
The coffee table has coffee on it (instead of 6 remotes), my girl loves me again and I am a happy camper.... Highly recommended "universal" remote!!

I was thinking of spending $100 or more on a fancy remote that I now know I really didn't need.
This remote is great. Easy to set up, but I found that the given code for my Motorola digital cable/DVR didn't work quite properly. A quick glance through the manual, and I used the "learn" function to map all the buttons properly. I'm really, really pleased at the functionality and price.
There is also a "volume lock" feature, so no matter what component I'm controlling, the volume and mute buttons are always locked on my home theater receiver.
Finally, the "macro" programming is great. Assign a list of commands to a single button. For example, I have a single button to turn on (or off) a whole list of components.
Give it a look!
