I know alot of people don't trust auto-feeders, and for the most part they're right. However, the Fishmate F14 is a different type of feeder.

It seems most of the negative reviews revolve around condensation getting their food soggy and preventing the unit from rotating. You know what nearly all of those reviews have in common? They're not hooking an air pump up to the air line attachment (more on that later in the review)! When I first got my unit, I did not use it either and had an issue with moisture after a few days. So I hooked up an air pump and, voila, problem solved! It's there for a reason, use it.

Another thing worth mentioning, do NOT put anything on top of the feeder. It seems that any weight on the top cover has a very good chance of catching the rotating wheel and causing it to hang up.

This feeder is absolutely fantastic, it's head and shoulders above the "drum" style feeders. As you can see, it's fundamentally different. The feeder has a rotating wheel with 15 compartments in it. At the front of the feeder, there is a hole the size of one of the compartments so that when the food is rotated over it, the food falls into the tank.

The main benefit of this style of feeder is that you can put premeasured amounts of food in the unit, as well as different types of food. I need to feed 3 times of food to my community tank (flakes, algae wafers, shrimp pellets) and this feeder allows me to do this. That wouldn't be possible with the drum style feeders. And since each portion is premeasured, there's no worry of the feeder dumping too much or not enough food into the tank.

The middle is like an automatic timer for lights, it does one complete rotation in 24 hours.

I have owned one of these units for over two years and use it to dispense food when I am away for short periods. The primary advantage of this unit over others that I own ie Eheim, Aquachef and Rena is the ability to dispense the precise amount of food you desire and even alternate the type of food between feedings.
Filling the small compartments was somewhat problematic until I began using a 1/8 tps measure for that purpose.
Care must be taken to ensure that the food compartment unit is positioned right side up. Failure to do so results in no food being dispensed.

Rigged this one up to the cover of a half gallon betta tank. It's a bit large for that, but based on other reviews, I decided to go with this one for its purported reliability. Some buyers cautioned about its use with flake food, but with the granular food we use for the fish at issue, it seemed appropriate. Since it's a small tank with no aeration, I didn't add an air supply. I did drill a few 1/8" holes in the sides of the lid to avoid trapping any evaporating water vapor; probably unnecessary, but I just wanted to be sure.

Loaded it up 2 days before Thanksgiving and hit the road. Got home Sunday night - the appropriate number of food chambers appears to have rotated through on time, and the fish is fine. So I decided to keep refilling it and let it run, to see how long a battery lasts in it. Since the whole thing is basically a AA-powered clock movement, I'm guessing it should run almost as long as any clock in my house with a similar movement charged by a AA Copper Top.

4 stars because it's overpriced - a $3 clock movement in a molded plastic chassis. But it seems reliable so far, and without any sophisticated mechanisms to bog down over time. Still, I spent 30 minutes modifying a $25 fish feeder to fit a $10 tank, to feed a $6 fish for 4 days.

I spent over a week mulling over which feeder to buy. Most of them out there don't deal with pellet food well at all based on the reviews. This feeder came with some caveats based on the reviews too. But knowing what I got into made everything easy and I have to admit that this was the best purchase for my BETA fish (2 beta fish in 2 separate tanks with 2 of these feeders). The caveat that made me worry was that each compartment, when rotating, had a small ridge where all the food didn't go in, or in the case of 1 BETA fish and only 3 pellets, none of it would go in. HOWEVER, it consistently rotates to this same spot (and this was not mentioned). Therefore, when I set up the feeder, I already prepared for the fact that the feeder would essentially miss the first meal. I, therefore, fed them manually when it was first set up. After that first time, both my tanks with only 1 fish in each tank, have been operating automatically flawlessly! The easy of access to fill the individual feeding compartments was a BONUS that I didn't expect nor read about. When there is only 3 compartments left (out of the 14) with food, I go in and easily drop 3-4 pellets in the empty ones, so there is no interruption. I plan on going away for 2 weeks and I will set it to rotate just once a day with 8 pellets in each compartment in that scenario. I expect things will run smoothly.

I full endorse this product for BETA fish with pellet food since it worked well with me.
