When you work with small pieces at a time or have a small project, it is a real pain to clean out your sprayer several times a day. You also need a durable finish that dries quickly, so that you can put on several thin coats in an hour. This is when a sprayer can could help, provided that the finish levels well, and does not tend to drip.

The main drawback here is the high cost per can. However, the time it saves makes up for it. You can save some money by using spray shellac for the first couple of coats, as it is functionally very similar and costs less. The advantage of lacquer is water and wear resistance. Normally you can use this lacquer over shellac without problems. However, note that if you have refinished something, it is possible that some kind of contamination (often from handling it) has been absorbed into the wood, in which case you will have a bubbling in the finish in that area, once you have lacquered it. (Keep sanding and use this finish only to repair that).

Clean out the nozzle if you are not going to use it again in the next 10 minutes (see directions). The spray pattern is about the best of the cans. Semi-gloss is pretty much a standard finish. If you need glossy, you won't be using cans. This blends well for repairs.

Overall, this is the best finish for small projects that I have used, and I have tried them all.

I produce everything from small Christmas ornaments to furniture in my wood shop. With the smaller stuff, it is much easier to use the can of Deft and make a large batch of lacquer to be used with a spray gun. I do not have to worry much about blow by, clean up is none existent and I do not waste lacquer. It's a good deal for me.

The semi-gloss leaves a nice luster without the fake plastic look. I brushed on a handful of shellac coats, sanding well between (shellac can be sanded and reapplied in about 20 minutes). However, the wax-free shellac is the best for between coats and doesn't leave that much of a protective layer. This final few coats of lacquer creates the protection that i'm looking for, while still penetrating and bonding well with the wood and under coats.

I do wood scrolling and the Deft semi-gloss spray is the best I have found for a consistent finish. It is quick drying which is an important factor as multiple light coats are required to bring out the wood grain without looking like a thick brush-on look. The recent change in the spray can cap was a welcome change as the old "pry loose with a screwdriver" was terrible. Buying in bulk (6 cans at a time) from Amazon helps take the edge off the pricy single can price.

I've used Deft for many years and have found the lacquer based product superior to water based finishes. I generally use semi gloss on unstained wood to protect the wood, enhance the grain and deepen the look. Most recently I've been using it as I assemble intricate scroll saw models and I apply it as I go rather than waiting till assembly is complete. Thie also protects the assembled pieces if I get glue on them

Reliable and very easy to use especially if one uses a shellac sealer, like Sealcoat by Zinsser. Lowe's doesn't carry either anymore aparrently the result of a pissin 'war with the parent company. So I order them from Amazon.

Both gloss and semi gloss Deft are great products to work with when finishing a guitar. It Quickly dries for multiple coats of lacquer. Like all nitro lacquer, you will have to wait around three to four weeks to completely cure. Wet sand and buff and you have a beautiful guitar to behold.
