I wanted a hygrometer to measure humidity inside a Brinsea Octagon 20 ECO poultry incubator. I don't need super accurate measurements; +/- 5% is fine for me, so I did not make any effort to calibrate it. I checked it against two other digital weather stations and it was within 1% of each.

What I needed was a small enough sensor to fit inside, ideally with a remote readout, so it would not be necessary to open the incubator in order to read the measurement. Initially I had hoped it might fit through the air vent, but while the wire would fit, the sensor is about 1/2" square and will not fit through the hole. Instead, I nestled the wire between the lid and the base, which worked well enough for this batch of eggs already in progress.

It is a real treat to have the hygrometer, and it eases much of my anxiety when hatching eggs. I can easily see if humidity has gone out of range and correct it without spending needless time and energy wondering what is happening to the humidity. I can easily see if my efforts to correct the humidity are effective.

It does seem to need about 15 minutes to acclimate to a new location before giving accurate results. You could not use this for any kind of spot reading.

I had some concern that the chicks might peck at it or that it might otherwise be in danger from them, but they ignored it completely. It also never seemed to be in their way.

Before the next hatch, I will cut a tiny slot in the edge of my incubator's clear lid section so that the wire has a permanent pass-through.

I'm extremely happy with my purchase and am looking forward to using it on another hatch.

This is for the Exo Terra Digital Hygrometer w/Probe - Exo Terra PT2477.

First off, I am not using this as a hygrometer for lizards. I am using it as a hygrometer for my ukulele and guitar cases. My wife's cousin has one for his pet iguana(?), and I liked the idea that the probe can sit remotely from the digital readout. So I thought, "If it is good enough to monitor the temperature of a living animal, then it should be good enough for my guitars and ukuleles!" I have the probe sitting in the soundhole of my guitar and uke, and the wire running through the case with the digital readout hanging out of the case. This way, I can monitor the relative humidity inside the case without having to open it.

Having said that, my only gripe is the inconsistency from one unit to another. I have 5 of these babies, and it will all read the minimum and maximum humidities properly, but everywhere in the middle is a bit off. I taped all of the probes onto a strip of cardboard, about 1" apart and all the probes facing the same direction. When I put the probes in a vacuum with dri-rite (a desiccant), all read 0%. When I put the probes in a humidity-controlled chamber (25 C), it all read 95%, and matched the built-in hygrometer reading on the chamber. But, when left alone in a room, the readings were not very consistent. One tends to read low (ie. 40%), and one tends to read high (ie. 52%). The rest fell somewhere in between (45%, 47%, 50%). I returned the one unit that read 40% and the replacement was closer to the other units (which now reads 46%).Read more ›

Works just fine. My only complaint is the suction cup is not of great quality that allows my to attach the probe wire to the side of the glass. The other problem Is the Velcro for the monitor. The adhesive on the Velcro isn't strong engh to allow the unit to stay in place, so I have it must laying loose on top of the vivarium. Calibration may be a tad off.

It works, but don't use it in anything that will consistently stay above 80 percent humidity. I used this with the probe inside my dart frog terrarium and it died within a month. I've used it for snake cages before with decent results.

Yes it does its job but only for a little while it worked great for about a month than it always said 20 never changed and when it changed it was very little no matter how much humidity there was. I suggest buying something a little better.

I have a terrarium set up for a few medium hermit crabs. Looks great, got the lighted top, digital thermometer, and this. Thermometer is working very accurately, however the hygrometer after a week, showed very low (in the 30%'s) when I know it's above 60. I'm returning it for another, so I'll update when I receive the new one.
