I'm writing this review just to let people know of a successful repair of Dr. Scholl's rubber (or whatever the material is) shoe soles.

I'm talking about the red label Dap Weldwood Contact Cement, not the green label. And the liquid form, not the gel. I know nothing about the green/gel.

The thin rubber(?) walking surface had separated from the thicker padded sole of these shoes--which I think is not an uncommon problem. A famous shoe repair glue failed, but probably because it's made for leather...duh.

Using the cheapest throwaway bristle (not foam) brush that Bigbox Hardware had on the shelf I applied 2 coats of glue to each piece. Happily, the glue seemed to be wetting the surface as I brushed it on, which was not so with the other glue I tried.

I waited some 30 minutes for the first coat to dry, and the same for the second coat. The first coat I considered to be a sealer coat, so the glue wouldn't simply disappear into the porous material.

I judged dryness by looking (gloss), and by touching. The glue remains a bit tacky to the touch when it's dry, but doesn't stick to your finger. Longer drying times are OK. The glue must be dry to work. Contact cement sticks only to itself, and only when it's dry.

Second coat applied and dry, pieces put together, yep, sticks just fine. Really, really sticks. I'm not kidding, it sticks. The slightest contact and the bond is made.

You want to heed those warnings about getting it right the first time. One way is to align the pieces with waxed paper between them, then carefully remove the waxed paper while pressing the pieces together.

DAP still wants pressure applied after the pieces are together, I guess to assure full contact.

I bought this to replace barges cement. It turned out to be much cheaper and a better product. It stays flexible and is thinner in consistency allowing me to spread it easier on my materials. A definite must have for any leather worker.

Good stuff. But here is a what I found to be a very important consideration that is not on the instructions/label and I don't want others to suffer my fate:

I was attaching wood veneer, but what happened to me may apply to other situations...

You apply the contact cement to each half, wait about 1/2 hour, and then attach the two pieces. You press it out with a roller (I actually use a plastic/nylon carpet tucker as it allows for better pressure per square inch with less effort). All is perfect and flat with no air bubbles. You stare at how good it looks, pretend your dog isn't simply happy to see come back from the garage...but this time he's actually proud of the job you just did, and you have a sandwich. So, figuring because the can says all is ready to go in 15-20 min, and it's been easily over an hour, you go to apply stain and poly coats for finish. DON'T DO IT!!!!! The light rub of stain looked great, but as the poly went on the veneer within about 5-10 minutes the sheet began to bubble. NOOOOOOOOOOOO! I did some internet research and found out from generous with knowledge sensei types this stuff needs a solid 48 hours to fully cure. Allow that time! Take the dog for a two day hike and then finish the project and you and your dog will be much happier for it.

(If you don't want to believe the above and poly two hours later and see the bubbles: Yes, you are in trouble. But don't beat the dog. I experimented and found a very hot iron with thin cloth between the wood and iron can help to get rid of the bubbles - but not perfectly. Lucky for me, I was able to save the project. Hold the iron barely moving it in one very small section (section by section) at the highest temperature and then say a little prayer. While some refinishing (a couple of days later) was needed, you may get as lucky as I did with the save.)

Lastly - don't use the green label contact cement Dap/Weldwood sells. Horrible stuff.

My first order for a can of contact cement was undeliverable.
Had to re-order another can of contact cement.
Received my re-ordered can of contact cement and noticed the lid of can was not completely sealed and had/was leaking.
I don't plan on returning the item. I've already missed the deadline for the project I was working on.

You can't beat this product. The Water based cement doesn't even come close to this solvent based cement. As long as you follow directions and pay attention to the dry time, it works great and lasts for years.

This is the original vintage version, so read and follow the warnings on the can. It is professional quality, but as flammable as ever and only suitable for use in a well ventilated area.

This is the original "liquid" consistency, easy to brush on, and dries quickly. Also available is the newer "gel" version, good for vertical projects as it sticks well to walls, etc. Both should be used with caution, avoiding open flames and breathing the vapors. Using in open air is best whenever possible.

I would recommend this product to others for careful use only as directed by the manufacturer.
