It's pleasing to see that the fairly recommendable Gold series has honoured Dusty with a 2CD set, but disappointing that they left off so many wonderful tracks (I assume it's a label licensing complication that wasn't worth major investment for a mid-price compilation set like this). The remastered quality is nice but not spectacular (I Close My Eyes and Count To Ten still has that very abrupt ending, The Look of Love isn't crystal clear, etc.) and the biography leaves out bits of her career (no discussion of her shelved album during her darker days and not much reflection upon Reputation or A Very Fine Love). It's not a terrible set, just terribly lacking in comparison to some of the Gold compilations for other artists that contain special bonus tracks or rarities. This would be fine as an introduction for a more casual fan or for collector's sake.

The same comments are being used for both "Gold" C.D.'s, how-ever ~ they are very different.
The 2008 Gold contains 51 tracks ~ the 2006 contains 28 tracks.
The 2008 contains all the songs that are on the 2006 "Gold" except for five, which are:
1. Silver Threads And Golden Needles ~ The Springfield's ~ top 20 hit 1962.
2. Oh No! Not My Baby
3. Who Gets Your Love
4. Tupelo Honey
5. Losing You (Just A Memory) (NOT the same song as her 1965 single release "Losing You" which IS on 2008 "Gold".)

The 2008 "Gold" is remastered tracks & contains 18 of 21 of Dusty's U.S.A. charted songs.

The three missing are.
1. Silver Threads And Golden Needles ~ with/The Springfield's ~ top 20 hit 1962.
2. Dear Hearts And Gentle People ~ with/The Springfield's ~ barely broke into the top 100 in 1962.
3. Willie And Laura Mae Jones ~ didn't make the top 50 in 1969.

2008 "Gold" ~ aside from the single releases, here are 33 great tracks that are various albums cuts etc.
among them are some great cover song ~ such as
"If You Go Away" ~ cover of Damita Jo 1968 release.
"Take Another Little Piece Of My Heart".
"How Can I Be Sure" ~ the 1967 hit for the Young Rascals.
"Spooky" best known for the 1968 hit by the Classics lV.

This is a good collection of Dusty's music.
From Universal (UK) 2008. Includes a 14 page, full color booklet with information on tracks & career.

2006 "Gold" ~ Gaining the hit ~ "Silver Threads And Golden Needles" but losing the single release of
Dusty's next to last song to chart. (U.S.A.) "Silly, Silly, Fool"
("Dear Hearts And Gentle People" and "Willie And Laura Mae Jones" aren't here either)

2006 ~ Aside from Dusty's hits ~ there are ten great album tracks.

This (the US version of Dusty Springfield's Gold anthology) is a nice collection of songs, but the UK version has more songs. It's not just a matter of quantity, but of quality as well. The UK version features a greater variety of songs, a number of which better cover her neglected '70s and early '80s songs.

If you just want the hits, this collection is adequate. If you want a broader representation of Springfield's career, get the UK version of Dusty's Gold. If you're a really big fan, check out Springfield's box set, "Simply Dusty."

Dusty's entry to Universal's Gold series is a bit short. Dusty Springfield may have been a bigger star overseas but there are fans on the America side of the Atlantic. Many of Dusty's hits are here, sure, but this collection falls off on the second disc. Nothing from her United Artists albums is included, nothing from her "Living Without Your Love" "Reputation" "A Very Fine Love" and "Live From The Royal Albert Hall" is here, her collaboration with Richard Carpenter and her duet with BJ Thomas are also missing. "Gold" would have been an opportunity to introduce Dusty to the American market had this collection been more generous and comprehensive. That said this collection is a well mastered representation of her very well known work. For we die hards "Simply Dusty" has been overhauled and is scheduled for an October release. *This review is for the U.S. edition, my opinion on the import is a wee bit different. The U.K. Edition contains 51 tracks and is a concise view of Dusty's entire solo career. This set is very well mastered and most of the tracks are single versions which means most of the singles, famous ones included, are the mono versions. All the tracks on disc one are mono except for the last three. The first seven songs on disc two are mono as are tracks twelve and thirteen. The later single from "Reputation" "Arrested By You" is the stereo edit. "Wherever Would I Be" is the duet version featuring Daryl Hall and is the U.K. mix and Dusty's final single "Roll Away" are both from Dusty's final album "A Very Fine Love" that be fittingly closes out this chronologically arranged collection. I'm a stereo guy and while I wish this entire release was stereo it's very well done and blows the U.S. version of this away. In fact the U.S. skimpy set is mercifully out of print.

This is a very good CD as a Dusty overview -- not as extensive as some, but the price is reasonable and it shows all aspects of her career. The only reason I gave it a four, not a five, has to do with the sound. The remastering isn't as good as it might be, but it's still very good.
