This is actually quite a beautiful bookmark/kit, but it's not so straight forward as you would think. All of the instructions come in the sample. The first thing that throws you off is that the thread is not coded in any obvious manner. Instead, you have to first separate out all of the colors and carefully make sure you put each clump of thread together with it's identical color clumps of thread. Provided you are not color blind, you should be able to figure this out after a little while.

I suggest that you should not be a complete beginner because this particular pattern does include regular/half and French knots as well as Turkey work and Satin Stitches. There are also some fairly intense instructions on how to finish this bookmark off with respect to borders and sewing off the loose parts. I should be ok in theory, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a little intimidating. I haven't quite finished the first bookmark yet, but will repost once I get it done.

Overall, it appears to be beautiful and Aida is a smaller count, will actually take more time than you would think for such a little project. I'm an average speeds stitcher (I think??) and have been working on this one for over 10 hours and am not done. I suspect it will be around a 30 hour project (for the blue bookmark, possibly less for the other) provided I don't run into any problems.

I am new to the cross stitching. And I didn't have problem to figure out how to make this project. It is very atractive design, not tacky like many cross stitch kits. The only downsize is luck of the detailed instructions for finishing, after the stitching is done. It took me consultations with my quilting friend and the seamstress to figure out how to make it look good. And it looks great. I don't like the golden ornaments so I just didn't use them.

I'm an experienced counted cross stitcher but found these tricky - especially the finishing. I think the design makes the bookmarks too wide to actually work well in a book, so I didn't complete the outermost stitched border. I don't think I'll make the second one.

These bookmark patterns are lovely, even prettier made up than the picture might indicate. Don't let the size fool you though, they're fairly difficult especially the blue one. This isn't a one-sitting project, but the work is ultimately worth it. An important note, the kit doesn't come with any backing for the book marks. I used adhesive felt on the first one I made, but may need to use something a little more durable and that affixes better on the next one. Overall, a fun, unique project.

I have finished one of the bookmarks and I love it. (I started with the pink and yellow vine themed one.) The finished bookmark is much prettier than the product picture shows. I would recommend this project for someone who is at least an advanced beginner. The cross stitching part didn't take very long, but the back-stitching, satin stitch, french knots and turkey work took several hours (approximately 15-20 hours of total work, including ironing and finishing the back...though it may have taken me a little longer because I had never done turkey work before).

There are a two small issues that are easily taken care of. The first issue is that the thread comes presorted on cards... once you pull one free there is no way to re-attach the thread to the card. I solved this problem by using a small hole punch to make holes above the colors on the card. (I actually found this far less irritating than purchasing a kit where the thread is not sorted at all.) The second issue is that the kit does not come with a back for the bookmarks. I used a piece of white felt and some fabric glue to cover the back and it turned out very nice.

The bookmarks are large. I wouldn't use one in a paperback book, but they are perfect for large hardback books. I actually gave the first one to my mother as a gift to use in her family bible. After finishing the first one, I can honestly say that I would have paid a lot more than they are charging for this kit. The instructions are easy to understand and the quality of the finished product is really nice.

Looks absolutely gorgeous, although I wouldn't recommend it for beginners.

Two major problems for me:
1. You can't reattach the strings back to the organizer card once you pull them out, which makes it really hard to organize...
2. I would like to have more stitch cloth (not sure what it's called actually...), so the back of the bookmark wouldn't have to be on the outside... I used all of it and glued the two pieces together since I made it for my boyfriend as a gift.
