Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

One of the most curious animated series to come from the Adult Swim stable, Frisky Dingo might be best described as a cartoon superhero take on Seinfeld's formula: a show that's about nothing, but one that's also funny and fascinating all the same. The brainchild of Sealab 2021 creators Matt Thompson and Adam Reed, the premise of Frisky Dingo concerns millionaire playboy Xander Crews, who moonlights as costumed crime fighter Awesome-X. Having vanquished his last archvillain, Crews is urged by his employees to return to his office to sort out the financial mess created by his alter ego. But the arrival of the monstrous Killface and his Annihilatrix (which will pull the launch the Earth into the sun) lures him back into… well, not so much action as lots and lots of paperwork. The resulting episodes of Season 1 concern Crews and Killface's attempts to fund their respective projects while dealing with distractions like Simon, Killface's incorrigible son, and Crews' exasperated second in command Stan. To say that Frisky Dingo is unlike any other superhero series on television (and very few animated series in general) is a distinct understatement, but there's a method behind the madness: that the vagaries of life often get in the way of the loftiest of goals. Of course, that doesn't explain the show's endless non sequiters and moments of true surrealism, like Awesome-X's clueless henchmen, the X-tacles, or episodes like "Emergency Room," in which the entire cast of characters spends the full running time suffering from various horrible injuries. Maybe it's best to think of this as meta-superhero action. All 13 episodes of Frisky Dingo's debut season are compiled on this single disc (each episode runs just 11 minutes), but sadly, no supplemental features are included. That's unfortunate, if for no other reason than they might have provided some sort of explanation for the show's motives. -- Paul Gaita

Product Description

Being a supervillain isn't what it used to be in this mind-melting show from the folks behind SEALAB 2021. Killface is a criminal overlord whose devious schemes are continually thwarted by the banalities of modern life. As cost overruns on his Annihilatrix threaten his maniacal ambitions billionaire tycoon Xander Crews (who moonlights as superhero Awesome-X) leaps into action to save the human race and perhaps secure precious action figure rights. A hilarious mix of corporate satire deadpan humor and lo-fi animation gives this series its signature style and offers a unique twist to the superhero genre. This collection presents the first season of the demented scatological series.System Requirements:Running Time: 154 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS UPC: 883929010134 Manufacturer No: 1000037139

5.0 out of 5 stars "Go Time!", January 16, 2008

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
From Sealab 2021 creators Matt Thompson and Adam Reed, Frisky Dingo takes the superhero spoof to new levels. Frisky Dingo introduces us to murderous supervillain Killface (who can be seen on the cover of the DVD set) who has plans to annihilate humankind. All that stands in his way is Awesome X, the superhero alter-ego of billionaire tycoon Xander Crews, and his incredibly inept team of X-ticles. As said before, Frisky Dingo is from the creators of Sealab 2021, so you can expect the same kind of ridiculous, insane, hilarity to be more than prevelant here. The animation is a step above and beyond what has been seen on Adult Swim in recent times, and the show features some of the absolute funniest dialogue and visual gags you will ever see from an original Adult Swim series. Along with Metalocaplypse, Frisky Dingo is the best newer show to hit Adult Swim in years, and this first season DVD set is sheer proof of that. An essential addition to any and every Adult Swim fan's library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great show, but no extras on this disc, March 26, 2008
While I fully agree with all of the other reviewers here who reviewed the series - rather than the actual DVD - I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of any video extras. There are 11 episodes on the disc and nothing more. The 'Welcome to You're "Doom"' postcard (a funny in-joke) was interesting, but more insight into the origins of the show and its making would have been more appreciated. Hopefully we'll get more value in future Adult Swim DVD releases (but please, no more "commentaries" that have nothing to do with the show).

5.0 out of 5 stars Bar none, funniest show on TV today! Buy, buy, buy!, December 20, 2007
Frisky Dingo is a hilarious animated comedy series that airs on Adult Swim, created by Adam Reed and Matt Thompson (of Sealab 2021 fame). This DVD set contains the first thirteen episodes, each ~12 minutes long, which make up season 1. Below is the plot summary of season 1 from Wikipedia:

"The first season of Frisky Dingo follows the adversial relationship between the villainous white behemoth Killface, who aspires to strike fear into humankind, and Awesome-X (the secret superhero identity of multi-billionaire Xander Crews), a superhero who has just defeated the last known super-villain but dislikes the idea of retiring."

...but really, plots aren't important. The humor here is top notch. Very quotable. Hilarious. It's definitely a show that will shine on DVD -- the complete season is between two and three hours long and it retails for the price of your average movie. I'd recommend watching it all in one sitting with a group of friends.
