Johnny and the Sprites is a Playhouse Disney program featuring John Tartaglia as Johnny, a young musician who's moved to the Grotto Grove woods to work on his music, and a host of magical (puppet) Sprites that only Johnny can see. As Johnny composes catchy songs with elements of everything from Broadway show tunes to jazz, the Sprites serve as his friends, companions, and, at times, his inspiration. Through their interactions with one another, Johnny and the Sprites learn about things like accepting oneself and others, problem solving, creativity, sharing, taking turns, and the importance of keeping promises and believing in oneself. A comparison between Johnny and the Sprites and Blue's Clues is inevitable, and the two shows are very similar in their use of music and cute creatures to appeal to and educate preschool-age children. What differs between the two shows is that in Johnny and the Sprites, John Tartaglia is a more polished singer than Blue's Clues' Steve Burns (Steve) or Donovan Patton (Joe), entire songs are performed rather than short melodic phrases, the music is a more integral part of the program, and the educational emphasis is on a broad range of social skills and virtues rather than specific skills like math and reading. The five episodes included in this compilation include "Ginger's Antenna Dilemma," in which Ginger's self-image suffers as a result of her curly antennae; "Root's Dadoots" which finds Root with a bad case of the dadoots (hiccups) that he just can't seem to get rid of; "Where's the Water, Lily?" in which Johnny inadvertently stops the water from flowing in Grotto Grove; "Basil's Band" where Basil's fascination with playing in a band causes him to forget his promises to his friends; and "The Sprites and the What?" in which Johnny and the Sprites learn to use their sense of creativity to make the best of a less-than-perfect situation. Also included is the "Heads Up" music video; five shorts about concepts like patience, celebrating one's strengths, sharing, taking turns, and the power of laughter; and a sing-along option which provides on-screen lyrics during the episodes. --Tami Horiuchi

"Meet the Sprites" is the first-ever DVD release for Playhouse Disney's amazing, magical series, "Johnny and the Sprites." This series, which is now in its second season of the full version, weaves amazing music, compelling characters and touching stories for an experience that shouldn't be missed. The program is complemented by its amazing cast and crew of top-fleet members of Broadway.

"Meet the Sprites" features the stories (please note that these are not full episodes) "Ginger's Antenna Dilemma," "Root's Dadoots," "Where's the Water, Lily?," "Basil's Band" and "The Sprites & the What?!" Note that this DVD does not include any new episode content. However, this DVD is essential for fans of the series for one reason in particular -- it includes the original shorts that launched the series. I repeat -- this DVD includes all five of the original shorts, which have not appeared on Disney Channel since the full-length series was launched.

The DVD also has two other neat bonus features -- "Heads Up" music video and a sing-along feature. One other thing to note -- this title is part of the Disney Movie Rewards program.

My 2 and 3 year olds LOVE Johnny and the Sprites so I was happy to find that a DVD had finally been released. We drove from Colorado to Illinois loaded down with DVD's and they watched this one the WHOLE TIME (about 17 hours!!!). They didn't want any of their other DVD's. I think that says it all - it must be a 5 star DVD to hold their attention that long!!! :)

Johnny and the Sprites is, in my opinion, the very best Disney preschool show. It's fun and entertaining, has great moral value and some really excellent modern Broadway-style music. I was so incredibly disappointed when it was cancelled, but was thrilled to see that I could get a DVD. I only wish that Disney would release all of the episodes on DVD!
