Editorial Reviews
manuscript review by Publishers Weekly, an independent organization
From the moment she set foot in the capital city of Vranion on a quest to find her missing fiancé, Lady Nianne E'Jelenya's journey seemed doomed to be a perilous, and tedious, affair. Arriving at dusk with nowhere to stay, she found out that the Empress Layne's strict curfew law promised violators would be executed on the spot. Nianne sought quick, emergency shelter in the basement of an abandoned building only to unwittingly fall into the company of "the most notorious underlife in Vranion," Detries E'Vornafall and his toady, Grid. Nothing if not noble, after trying and failing to sell her back to the House of Jelenya, the pair promises to help Nianne navigate the dangerous city of Vranion and locate her lost lover. In the meantime their business brings them into contact with other underground forces plotting to overthrow the Empress. But action-packed expedition and romance is too long and too predictable to work any significant magic.

"The Dragon and the Butterfly" engrossed this reviewer right off the bat. The descriptions and characterizations are concise yet complete and provide a depth that allows one to feel a part of the action. The story moves quickly with an ongoing sense of tension, making the reader want to continue with it. Although it is a fairly common story type, the telling of it makes all the difference in this case. Nianne has come to Vranion seeking her fiancé. Unfortunately, she forgot about the curfew and arrived after dark and could not get any of the inns to open their doors, as the patrols came closer and closer. Since the penalty for being out during curfew is instant execution - no exceptions - Nianne has to find someplace to hide. She finally finds an open window into a warehouse and slips inside - to find the irrepressible Grid inside. Grid is waiting for his friend - a mysterious nobleman only introduced as "D" - and once D arrives, they leave the safety of the warehouse and travel to a manor, walking brazenly and slowly down the middle of well-lighted boulevards, yet strangely unnoticed by any patrols. It seems Nianne might have fallen into strange companionship. Nianne is only a simple country girl and Vranion is a large city with many rules - she is about to find out just how complicated things can become as she searches for her fiancé. I feel safe in recommending this story - it is well-written and interesting and I would definitely enjoy reading the entire book.

4.0 out of 5 stars All I need is some hot tea, a blankie, a cat or three..., February 28, 2008

...and the rest of this story.

I like the title. The synopsis reads like the back of a book I'd snatch off the bookstore shelves and head to the tables to check out. The excerpt also begins well.

Lady Nianne E'Jelenya is literally shoved off the cart that transports her to the city of Vranion and pointed in the direction of the inns. Nobody's out on the streets. That's peculiar in a city of over a million, but she's heard of the curfew.

Then she reads the signs that anyone out after dark will be executed. It's not dark yet, it's just dim...Only, no one will come to the inn and the city guards are coming!

If you want to know the rest, you've got to read the excerpt, but I'm warning you, Laurel Amberdine leaves you in the lurch at the end of 5,000 words, too.

Ms. Amberdine starts off very well, presenting us with a sympathetic heroine who's clearly 'not from around here' getting stuck in an untenable position. Lianne's a brave and resourceful young woman, but clearly Vranion's in deep trouble from the Empress Layne on down. So far, the opening's delivered on the promise of the synopsis-blurb. I'd definitely be reading more and probably buying the book.

Best of luck to Laurel Amberdine with "The Dragon and The Butterfly." I do hope to see this book on my store shelves someday soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Appealing Characters, January 19, 2008

I really like the opening scene of this excerpt, in which Nianne arrives at her destination and pauses to decide how to dismount her vehicle, only to be shoved out by the driver. This interaction sets a harsh tone for the story and was an inspired way to start.

I like the uncertainty of Nianne's character. She is lost in a city in which she doesn't really know the rules or the way things operate. This vulnerability, paired with her determination to find her missing fiance, makes her a sympathetic and appealing character.

Grid is charming, and his discussion of his poor unattractive, slow, and smelly friend while Nianne heals his knee is amusing, especially when that friend soon shows up on the scene. Grid already provides great comic relief for this story, without being overly buffoonish.

The investigator's report on the cavern system below the city piqued my interest. I am already wondering how that affects our story, and what threat it might be to the authorities. I like to get a glimpse of the corrupt underbelly of a city.

Ragnald is an interesting character, although I'm not entirely sure what it is that he is doing. He is a strong villain, though, and will be a formidable opponent to one who is able to challenge him.

I am rooting for Nianne to find what she is looking for in this story. She has already been set up as a strong woman with a mission, and has gathered a couple of helpful friends to her. An evil villain has been introduced in another part of the city and shown at his worst. This seems to be the start of a highly entertaining tale!

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks like a highly entertaining fantasy, February 10, 2008
I really wish I had the complete book in convenient paperback size right now. With that, hot chocolate and the old comforter, I could hunker down and ignore the falling temperatures that the weather forecaster has in store for us this February day.

A sympathetic and somewhat naive heroine and an evil priest practicing black magic underground--this is good solid fantasy in the best traditional mode. The reader opens the page and the good writing just leaps up like a pop-up! Then it grabs you and drags you down a dark tunnel where a nameless monster awaits. This is as fine as Raymond E Feist's first novel, Magician:Apprentice. I have one and only one question: why hasn't this been published yet?
