I bought one of these and ended up using two $8 American Valve quarter-turn valves. Why?

The Duo-Clozure and similar systems seems like a good idea but are very risky. Why? O-rings. Installing it involves 4 O-rings. The repair kit has seven (7) o-rings and 4 Teflon disks. All of these o-rings are cheap neoprene, not even silicone.

So basically you have something like 11 o-rings between high pressure water and your house. How long until one blows out? It is scary to think about.

Quarter-turn valves, even though made in China of course, are a well-proven and simple technology. They have very heavy bushings that are not going to just blow out.

It only takes about 3 seconds more to turn off two valves. So consider buying a less than $30 Oatey or similar kit rather than the single handle valve.

Because it was not practical to completely remove the existing valve, I needed an exact replacement so that I could replace only the body. After much research, including contacting the manufacturer (Oatey, who said is an identical valve), I STILL had an issue with the installation! The main body looks identical to the original, but here's the subtle undisclosed difference. The recess where the O-ring sits is DEEPER than the original. There is one level of recess on the original whreas this one has TWO. As a result, I had metal to metal contact before the O ring fully sealed (compressed). Fortunately, the original O rings were in good enough condition that I placed them into the recess first (perfect fit) and then put the new rings on top of them. Basically, I increased the thickness of the seal which took up the slack.

I would have given a five star rating, but chose four. This is because other than the one problem the valve is in all other ways identical; thus preventing me from having to remove the entire assembly to install a different kind of valve.
