In response the 'virologist' that states that L-Lysine has no documentation that it works, I beg to differ. There are numerous studies in the human population that suffers from Herpes Simplex that L-Lysine works. (I was in one of those studies!) Extrapolating this to the feline population that suffers from Herpes, albeit a slightly different version, it can be assumed to work. Anecdotal reports from cat owners such as myself give testimony to it's effectiveness.

My personal anecdote is that my Persian was suffering so severely from Herpes in his eyes that his ophthalmologist (yes, there is such a thing as a cat ophthalmologist) felt she was going to have to extract his left eye and possibly both eyes. After 2 months of treatment with multiple anti-virals, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs, my cat still had corneal ulcers from the Herpes so severely that even I was considering allowing his ophthalmologist to remove at least one eye. I could see no other way to stop his obviously severe pain. And to this day, his corneas are visibly and severely scarred from those ulcers.

Finally, his ophthalmologist suggested L-Lysine at 400 mg per day. When that did nothing, I upped his dose to 1,000 mg per day after reading on the Internet that it often took that much to be effective. Within 3 days, I could see a huge improvement. Within another week, his eyes were healed. After having chronic eye infections for his entire 2 years of life, he didn't get another infection for a year and a half. At that time, I upped his dose again to 1,250 mg per day and he is again free of infections.

5.0 out of 5 starsLack of "Credible Evidence" be Damned - The Retired Virologist is Wrong About This Stuff!

Last winter I adopted three cats who were trying to survive in the dumpster of the apartment complex where I live. I spent a considerable amount of time and money on these kitties, and was very happy with their adaptation from hungry, skittish strays to loving, healthy companions.

About four months ago, one of my not-so-animal-loving neighbors trapped Dexter, the biggest and oldest of the bunch, and took him to the local animal shelter. Lucky for Dex, I found him in time - scared witless and more than ready to come home. Within days he came down with an upper respiratory infection, which (according to the vet) was what caused a nasty eye infection. THANKS NEIGHBOR!

Of course ALL the cats became infected, and I dutifully administered the antibiotic eye ointment prescribed. At first it seemed that the ointment did the trick, but the goopy-nasty eyes and the runny noses came back within a week after the ointment was gone.

The vet recommended Enisyl-F Oral Paste, and being pretty tired of taking them back to the veterinarian clinic, I gave it a try.

I noticed an improvement in FOUR DAYS. Now there is no more cat sneeze and ucky-eye-goop to worry about in my home environment. No more having to totally disinfect everything again and again and AGAIN. No more having to medicate my cat-herd four times daily. Currently I dose them all once daily, a full pump each morning, and am keeping close watch to see if they might need more. So far so good - they are looking great!

I am no "retired virologist" and not even remotely close to being a scientific type of person, but I can attest that this stuff really works. Enisyl-F is highly recommended by one of the top veterinarians in my town, and now, wholeheartedly by me - self-proclaimed cat lover.

My vet originally recommended Enisyl for my kitten who was struggling with chronic upper respiratory infections. The Enisyl, combined with antibiotics took care of the flare up. Now I give him Enisyl whenever he starts to show signs of getting sick (usually the eye starts twitching), and so far we've successfully avoided another bout for five months. Lysine is not meant to attack the virus itself, but rather helps the cat's immune system do a better job. I'm no virologist, but to me, it's worth the money to avoid expensive trips to the vet and extra medications.

My kitten unfortunately was diagnosed with Feline Herpes. After the 4th or 5th eye infection in a short span of time, our vet concluded that this would be the life I'd have with this kitty unless I tried L-lysine. LET ME TELL YOU, THIS IS A MIRACLE IN A BOTTLE. She has not had ANY problems at all since I've been giving her this. 5 months so far, and she's prefect! This stuff prevents the virus from shedding, therefore the symptoms are gone! 2 pumps a day is all she needs. She loves the taste of it, and gobbles it willingly, she's almost looking forward every morning to her treat! I've searched the internet, this is the BEST DEAL as far as cost goes. It's not expensive to give your cat what he/she needs! Buy it here!

I foster cats and kittens and many of them come to me quite sick. I was skeptical at first of using lysine to treat the drippy nose and runny eyes in cats and kittens with feline herpes but now I'm a believer. It really works very well to eliminate the symptoms. This formula can be dispensed into a fine tipped medicine syringe and dosed that way. I guess some cats will llick it up but not many that I've worked with will do that, however for me the dosing with a medicine syringe in the side pouch of their mouth is quick and easy.

One note, unless you have a chronic case that will need this on a permanent basis, you should keep the cat/kitten on it AT LEAST 2 weeks after the last symptom. I keep them on it a month just for extra protection against a relapse.

Two people have written comments saying it's been proven that Lysine does not work for feline herpers. DON'T BELIEVE IT! I'm sure the comments are well intentioned but as someone who has fostered more that 200 cats & kittens over the last 10 years, I can tell you that lysine works on cats with herpes. Absolutely... positively... it works! Cats can have a variety of ailments with symptoms that are similar to herpes and in those cases, it won't make a difference; but it is a life changer for cats who do have herpes. You have to be patientc and get the dose right. Some cases might even require life long administration of the lysine but it DOES work. I haven't seen a difference between brands but personally, I like this brand because of the way it dispenses. I find it easier than using pills or powder.
