Continuing on the success of the wide-angle, long zoom FinePix S8000fd, the 10-megapixel FinePix S8100fd integrates a Fujinon 18x Wide Angle Optical Zoom fixed lens, which offers a 27mm-486mm equivalent and allows the user to achieve greater range than ever before. The sealed, fixed-lens system prevents dust contamination and eliminates the need for additional zoom or wide angle lenses, making it an easy-to-use, affordable alternative to the complex DSLR system.

1) Face in sharp focus, 2) Optimized brightness
Features born from Face Detection Fujifilm’s innovative face detection technology, recognized with a 2007 'Best of What’s New Award' from Popular Science Magazine, has enabled a number of advanced features that advanced consumer photographer will enjoy. Face Detection operates by identifying and prioritizing up to 10 faces in a framed scene and then adjusting the focus and exposure accordingly to ensure the sharpness and clarity of human subjects in the picture, regardless of background.

After the shot is captured, the automatic Red Eye Removal feature instantly checks each detected face for red eye and if it’s found, corrects it in the camera automatically, saving the time-consuming process of fixing it in your PC after the image is downloaded. A new Instant Zoom function captures moving subjects at high zoom settings. After zooming on a subject, a single button gives an additional 1.4x or 2x digital zoom at the center focus region of the frame. Zoom Bracketing performs a similar action using Fujifilm’s face detection technology to lock its zoom action on a subject’s face automatically as it enters the shot.

Zoom Bracketing For fail-safe portraits or active zoom snapshots, a convenient Zoom Bracketing function automatically records the same image three times with zoom ratio settings of 1x, 1.4x and 2x at a single release of the shutter.

When function is activated, three frames are previewed in the viewfinder at 1x, 1.4x and 2x. In 10-megapixel mode, 1.4x frame is captured at 5M; 2x frame at 3M.

Enjoy improved clarity with Dual Image Stabilization
Dual Image Stabilization Like the FinePix S8000fd, the FinePix S8100fd features Fujifilm’s Dual Image Stabilization, a marriage of mechanical sensor shift stabilization, to steady the photographer’s hand, with Fujifilm’s Picture Stabilization Technology, which uses fast shutter speeds and ISO levels of up to ISO 6400 (at 5 megapixels) for total anti-blur protection. As a result, an increase in clarity and sharpness is achieved, even in low light conditions. A Continuous Shooting Mode makes it easy to shoot moving subjects like pets and kids. This new feature allows high-speed shooting of up to 33 frames at 13.5 frames per second (at 3 megapixels; 6.8 frames per second at 5 megapixels). And with high speed playback at 10 frames per second, you can be sure you’ve captured all of the action.

18x optical zoom in action
Active Long Zoom For Every Shooting Scenario The FinePix S8100fd is equipped with an ultra-high quality Fujinon 18x optical zoom lens, covering an extremely broad range of focal lengths from wide 27mm to super-telephoto 486mm*. Despite this high-performance 18x zoom lens, the FinePix S8100fd is designed to be compact and easy to carry, making it the ultimate photographer's traveling companion.

Instant Zoom Instant Zoom is a convenient new function for capturing moving subjects at high zoom settings. After you zoom in on your subject, a single button gives you an additional 1.4x or 2x digital zoom for added zoom impact. Instant Zoom also makes it easy to frame and compose your shots.

i-Flash i-Flash Intelligent Flash detects subtle lighting differences within a scene and then varies the flash intensity accordingly. It also leverages the high sensitivity of the FinePix S8100fd to enable the camera to use less flash, resulting in an image that displays pleasing, natural tones without a washed-out effect. And with an automatic pop-up flash, it’s always ready when you need it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great features, a great option if you don't want a D-SLR, May 8, 2008
By JS-FL (Florida) - See all my reviews
Was considering upgrading to a D-SLR type camera from my typical point-and-shoot camera, but I have to admit I was intimidated by price and complexity. I found the Fujifilm S8100fd to be the perfect blend of advanced features, price and complexity level. I wanted something that had a good telephoto/zoom lens and this one is awesome. The stability really helps keep things from being blurry and the advanced modes (multi-shot, movie, flash and no flash at same time [sounds odd, read the manual]) are really cool. This camera helps me take better pictures in almost any scenario. Add in an 8GB SDHC card and you have the ability to store thousands of photos and hours of video. Love this camera!

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the Camera, April 21, 2008
By Xavier Davis (Suwanee, Ga USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've had the camera for about a month now. I would consider myself a very amateur photographer. But I love this camera. It's more than a point and shoot but not quite a DSLR, I'd call it an advanced Digital camera. It can be used as a point and shoot but I think as your experience grows with the camera, the functionality and use of the camera becomes one of its greatest strengths.

The only con I have is minor. The face detection function doesn't seem to trigger as often as I think it would (considering 90% of my photos are of my baby son) and often the detection picks up things that aren't . . . well faces.

Other than this, it's a great camera. Even the video capture is impressive. Highly recommended to those who want more than a point and shoot but don't want to commit to the more expensive DSLR cameras.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fuji Comes Through Again!, May 31, 2008
By Kirk J. Hockman (Topeka, KS USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
We have had a Fuji S5000 for about 4 years, shot over 18,000 pictures with the camera. We shoot pictures of our daughters softball, 5 sequential shots at a time. It really adds up on the picture count, of course we don't save all of those pictures. You always get at least one good one out of five. Wanted to replace the old S5000, internal battery backup had died. When you replace the batteries, had to reset the time, date, etc.
Did a lot of research for a replacement and settled on the Fuji S8100fd. The two biggest reasons was: 1) Option for 7 Frames per Second or 16 Frames Per Second. 2) 18x Zoom.
We have been very, very, very pleased with the picture quality and the very high frame rate. It was a great purchase!
Cons: Cannot screw a filter on the end of the lens, that option has saved the lens on the S5000. We do not like the lens sticking out, ie not protected like the S5000. Will have to be a lot more careful with the S8100fd.
Would buy it again! Great Fuji product!
