I bought these for doing quick colored sketches and drawing on the go-- situations in which I don't want to burn through my more expensive set of Prismacolor Premiers or expose them to potential damage during transport. This review will be primarily focused on the differences between these two product lines.

Compared to their professional-quality counterparts, the scholar pencils have less intense color and so they don't blend exactly with the premier line. The scholar pencils also seem to "build up" faster than the Premiers, meaning you won't be able to apply as many layers. I wouldn't use them on any of my finished projects for that reason. Despite these two negatives, Prismacolor Scholars are VERY good pencils (and an amazing value). They are far more durable than the Premiers; they go through the daily abuse of being tossed around in my bag and not a single pencil core (aka "lead") has broken yet--let's see a Premier stay in one piece through that! The purple (too pale) and light green (too minty for my taste) that come in this set are quite strange, but you can blend the primary colors to get more interesting combinations. Thus, these do everything they're supposed to-- a decent quality student-grade line of pencils. If you're looking for a pencil that will give you a little more than those Crayola sets, but don't want to shell out the big money for the Premiers or another expensive brand, Prismacolor Scholar pencils are the place to start-- but if these are going to be your main set of colored pencils invest in a larger set! The 12-pack serves my sketching purposes just fine, but the selection is a bit too small for anything more serious.

I'd also like to note that these erase quite well--at least better than any colored pencil I've used before.Read more ›

I have tried 3 different kinds of pencils. Crayola, Prismacolor Premier and these.
These lay down very smoothly and have nice pigment. You don't have to press near as hard as Crayola. I started with Crayola so I think these will be perfect once I get use to them.

I wanted to try a "professional" set of colored pencils on my drawings, expecting a real impact in my art work. However, I didn't want to jump into the most expensive set just for trying so I selected the Primacolor Sholar which I consider as an entry to the Prismacolor brand. For the purpose of everyday use, I think these pencils are awesome.

This set includes only 12 Colored Pencils: Crimson Lake, Orange, Lemon Yellow, Permanent Green, Dark Green, Permanent Blue, Copenhagen Blue, Violet, White, Skin, Dark Brown and Black. This set includes White and Skin colored pencils which my previous set lacked, but it is otherwise limited in colors. However, I have settled on a limited pallet of color for the type of art I wanted to create. These pencils work very well sketch or drawing paper, where it can be cleaned off easily without smearing with vinyl or kneaded eraser.

However, the main selling point of Prismacolor Scholar is that you get a good quality colored pencils for a low price. I'm very satisfied with these.

Bought these to use on my Shrinky Dinks. Bazinga! Beautiful colors, vibrant. The 'lead' is soft, so they require frequent sharpening, and my favorite colors probably won't last too long. I also have to use a fixative (like hairspray) to keep the pencil from smearing after baking the shrinky dinks, but these are great pencils and well worth the money.

I bought these as a gift and they came fully intact (still pointy) and the color quality is great. This is the perfect size pack for a small gift or stocking stuffer. I love prismacolor colored pencils and they are the absolute best gift for artists and those that like to just doodle. These work especially well in the adult coloring books and the blending is very smooth.
