I was thrilled when I heard that Silverstein had released a new cd, seeing i liked much of their earlier material and "Discovering the Waterfront" is one of my all time favourite cd's.

I've listened through the cd a few times.. I don't like the new guitar sound, it's alot more "mainstream" .. more similar to what bands like Yellowcard and etc use. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate anything just because it's "mainstream" .. but when you have something original going on i dont think its a good idea to abandon it.

Also I think this cd lacks heart and the pure raw emotion Discovering the Waterfront had.. most of the songs just don't hit home for me.

Standout tracks for me:

If you could see into my soul (only song that reminds me of dtw)
The sand will turn into glass
Vanity and Greed
True Romance

I selected 3 stars, although I feel the album deserves three and a half. Silverstein burrowed their way into my heart with their almost perfect embodiment of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde in their album 'Discovering the Waterfront'. Not only in the vocals, but in the tone and tempo of the music as the album progressed. I hoped for more of the same with 'Arrivals & Departures', however I was surprised to find that Silverstein has moved back toward 'When Broken is Easily Fixed' in their style.

The band we know and love surely isn't absent though - thrilling standouts such as 'If You Could See Into My Soul' and 'My Disaster' still grab me by the belt and drag me to the pit when Shane Told lets loose his scream over perfect breakdowns. Many of the other tracks find a sort of driving rythm which Silverstein hasn't really much used before. The reason is quite clear - if you've caught the band on their current tour, you know that the songs from Arrivals & Departure are crazy fun live bits.

I will say that 'Discovering the Waterfront' is a better album. I won't say this one is bad. The music suffers from a kind of muddiness on the CD (blame the studio, which was a different one for this album) but is still lovely. Silverstein has departed the style they hit so well on Discovering the Waterfront but it still echoes in the background. But as of yet, they haven't arrived at a style which truly showcases their talent. I trust them though, and I'm sure whatever's next will be fantastic.

A final note - While listening to this, I kept thinking Arrivals & Departures = 'When Broken is Easily Fixed' + 'Say Hello to Sunshine' + 'Watch Out!!!'. Not a bad pedigree.

When I heard that there was going to be a new Silverstein CD come out I waited untill it came out and I went to go order it.

But After I read all of the crapy reviews for it I wasn't sure I wanted to get it anymore.

After a while of thinking about it I just decided I would just get it anyways. And well, to make a long story short, I think the CD is awesome and definately worth the money. If you're wondering weather to buy it or not based on the reviews it's gotten I would recomend you to just but it and see for yourself.

I was not a huge fan of the first Silverstein CD "When Broken is easily Fixed". But there were a few decent tracks on it. Then I had heard a few tracks online from "Discovering the Waterfront". I was so impressed with them that I went out and bought their sophomore attempt. I was not let down. It was amazing. I was shocked at how well their sound had progressed and how intense the songs were on that record. I thought "Here is a band that might actually get better with every album".

So obviously I was excited upon hearing about the release of their newest record "Arrivals and Departures". And I hate to say it, that is exactly what this album is. The arrival of a newer, much more watered down version of their first CD, and the departure of the sound that encompassed "Discovering the Waterfront, which had made them one of my favorite bands.

I heard the song "The sound of the sun" online and I was tricked. I went out and bought the CD based on that song, and thought the rest of the album would be at least that good if not better. How wrong could I have been. Besides the first track the album was chalk full pop punk/emo hooks and run-of-the-mill high school-esque lyrical content. Not to mention most of the songs seemed to blend together. There was hardly a change in pace from song to song. The drumming was consistently mid tempo punk drumming and the screaming that filled the last album seemed to fall to the wayside.

So the overall synopsis. Upon finishing the first listen to the CD, I quickly popped "Discovering the Waterfront" back into the stereo. Maybe these guys should have taken an extra six months to write some better material. A band is supposed to mature with the release of every album, not digress.Read more ›

I was quite excited to see Silverstein came out with a new album, but after listening to the preview tracks, I'm not sure how I feel about it. If you're a fan of the last two albums, this probably won't be what you're looking for. It seems they have gone the way of pop punk, so if you are into bands like NFG or American HI-FI, this album will probably be right up your alley. It's not so much that the new tunes are bad, but for those of you looking to find new songs with the same feel of the good ol' days, you'll likely be disappointed with this one.
