Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

An entertaining amalgam of the Transformers toy line, 1980s animated series and the live-action film by Michael Bay, Transformers Animated: Transform and Roll Out updates the venerable robot warriors without losing their core appeal to younger viewers. Sold as a feature film but actually the first three episodes of the Transformers Animated TV series, Transform and Roll Out re-imagines the Autobots as a misfit crew led by an untested Optimus Prime (voiced by David Kaye), who find the Allspark (the key to the Transformers' power) while clearing the way for a space bridge. The discovery brings the Decepticons on their trail, and the five Autobots (who include Bumblebee, Ratchet, Bulkhead and Prowl) decide to cool their jets for a half-century in Lake Erie. The action flashes forward when the Allspark is found by young Sari Sumdac (Tara Strong), whose scientist dad Isaac (Tom Kenney) is having some trouble with his robotic experiments, namely a monstrous cyber-cockroach that threatens Detroit. The heroes come to the rescue of humanity, but their actions also bring the villainous Starscream (also Kenney) to Earth for a crowd-pleasing Autobot-Decepticon showdown. As with any revival of an established and well-loved storyline, there's much to quibble over in Transformers Animated--there are fewer players on the board (though the number of Transformers increases over the course of the series), and the change in the characters' origins may raise some hackles among longtime fans (the manic Sari may also be an acquired taste). But as pure rock-em-sock-em action, Transformers Animated delivers the goods, which should satisfy newcomers to the Transformers' world, and also displays a welcome sense of humor. The latter gets a fun showcase in the two animated shorts which make up the DVD extras, the best of which pits Optimus Prime against an inquisitive classroom of children. --Paul Gaita

Product Description

A ragtag group of AUTOBOTS led by OPTIMUS PRIME are in a remote sector of CYBERTRON cleaning space bridges when they stumble upon the most import artifact in TRANSFORMERS history; the ALLSPARK! The DECEPTICONS who are only scary myths for many AUTOBOTS are in hot pursuit of the ALLSPARK; now this new band of AUTOBOTS must fight for their lives and the future of CYBERTRON. The AUTOBOTS are able to escape the DECEPTICONS and crash land on an unknown planet called Earth. They land in Lake Erie and remain in stasis for 50 years. Meanwhile, MEGATRON, sabotaged by STARSCREAM lost the ALLSPARK and fell to Earth in scattered pieces. A young scientist named Isaac Sumdac discovers him and uses his technology to create the modern robotics industry in Detroit. The AUTOBOTS awaken from stasis, during an emergency. Deciding to help the new organic life forms, they convert into emergency vehicles and fight off a scary creature. Unable to stay in disguise they change into their robot forms able to save the day! In doing so, they become new celebrities and heroes to the humans. OPTIMUS PRIME and his band of AUTOBOTS make Detroit their adopted home and vow to protect the ALLSPARK and Earth from the DECEPTICONS and anyone else who try and cause chaos. MEGATRON comes online during all of the commotion and discovers his headless body in Isaac’s lab! AUTOBOTS hold the key to his rise and eventual rule of the universe!

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy the season set in August 2008 + This for complete season, June 23, 2008
By D. Hong (Philla, Pa) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This only contains the first 3 episodes of the series. Season 1 boxset is coming out on August 19 2008 for about $20, which will include the remaining 13 episodes (episodes 4-16). These episodes, from what I hear on TFW2005 site says will not be included in the season 1 boxset.

This is a fantastic series, and being a fan of the original, you will notice a lot of references to G1 that casual viewers would miss. I will not post any of those here as it might be spoilers to those who have not yet seen the series.

I highly recommend viewers to give this series a chance, you will be surprised at how cleaver and entertaining it is.

My 3 star ranking is based on the fact that they are not including extras, and separating the first season into 2 packages instead of releasing them all at once. The show gets 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars A New Transformation, June 24, 2008
By Tim Coogan "CN fan" (Millville, NJ) - See all my reviews
The cult classic "Transformers" gets a brand-new look in the new Cartoon Network series "Transformers Animated". Given the success of the hit Transformers movie, I'd say that is the reason why they created this "Megas XLR" meets "Teen Titans" action series.

The original characters like the Autobots such as Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Bulkhead, and the Decepticons like Starscream take on new adventures in a futuristic Detroit. Whether they take on villains as robots or stop them in their tracks in their vehicle modes, you just know it'll get cooler every time.

This DVD has the very first three episodes, which is the "Transform and Roll Out" opener. The Autobots not only attempt to rescue the city, but they have a whole lot to learn about the human world with the help of a little girl named Sari.

So anyway, this is a good DVD to own, but the full complete first season will be released later this summer ! Also keep an eye out for brand new episodes Saturday mornings only on Cartoon Network's Dynamite Action Squad block !

5.0 out of 5 stars Blast from the past..., October 2, 2008
I loved transformers g1 growing up. I bought the G1 DVD's a few years back, and thought they were a little too violent for my 3 year old (even though he loved them). I caught this on Cartoon network by accident and thought it was perfect for him. He really likes it, and it brings back some memories for me. Good fun!
