the person on top who reviewed this is an idiot. youve been listening to this stuff for nine years, yet you still dont realize that dj's dont produce any of the sound? all the tracks on this cd are made by other people with the exception of one song. he doesnt "throw random sounds in from his library" because this is a MIXED CD which means songs, already made, are simply mixed together to create an album. dieselboy is not creating music, he is playing it a certain way. if you have problems with the sounds on the album, then your problem is with the producers (who are listed), not with dieselboy.

the mixing is surgically precise, always so, but the track selection is odd. the first song doesnt belong in my ears let alone on a DSL album, but from #2 on its a fun ride. the upbeats, psidream, counterstrike and gridlok tracks are nuts. from number 12 to the end is nonstop energy, well worth a purchase. looking forward to the next one.

oh and if you normaly listen to andy c & pendulum, of COURSE you dont like it!! thats a completely different style of DnB, bouncy happy basslines and singing and whatever else. DSL makes dark, disgustingly awesome cd's and for you to be a long-time dnb fan, you shouldnt be surprised or even listening to it at all if you cant figure out what a dj does after all this time.

the more you know.

Dieselboy's mixes just keep getting better and better, but his song collections get weaker and weaker. The reason for this is that lately Dieselboy is getting too modest and prefers to turn the attention over to other artists too much. Instead of the classic, masterful touches he used to showcase on his song collections of the second discs of 6ixth Session and Dungeonmaster's Guide, he lets other artists use their unmixed versions on his latest albums, Human Resource and now to a lesser extent, Substance D, so that they can get a little much-needed exposure. Like 6ixth Session and Dungeonmaster's Guide, he uses Disc 1 for the mix and Disc 2 for the song collection. Obviously, Disc 1 is better since all the classic Dieselboy touches are present on this disc. However, to Dieselboy's credit, the song collection on Substance D is stronger than the song collection on Human Resource, "his" last album ("Dieselboy Presents" is preceeded before the title). (By the way, Substance D is a fictional drug that was used in the movie "A Scanner Darkly" and has little to do with the movie here.) I paid $20 for Substance D. I think it was worth it because I think Dieselboy is the best drum-and-bass DJ out there and his good stuff is so addicting. It's just that he needs to come to his senses and stop being so nice by promoting other DJ's that's all. Strong execution, poor decision-making (disc 2). Hopefully in the future, he will come up with a mix as strong as disc 1 of Dungeonmaster's Guide and a song collection as masterful as disc 2 of 6ixth Session to achieve a complete masterpiece that his fans are longing for.

This is classic Dieselboy; it is in your face; dark, fast intense, mechanized beats. I don't think I have heard anything like it since 6th Session. It may not have the musical inclination and remixes of Dungeon Master's Guide where Substance is more hardcore drum and bass with classic beats. I am also finding that Substance grows on you and has a lot of replay value. You almost have retrofit your mind to absorb Substance-D and then once you do, you can't stop listening. We want your soul!!!, Paris, SFX are just amazing.

I am sure this will get some negative reviews; for those that want more AndyC and Pendulum or maybe those that got lost from listening to Tiesto; Substance-D are far away from that type of sound. I personally like my drum and bass creative and dark and Substance-D has all of that.

On the negative side.
1. I didn't like the second cd that much or at all. It seems like he wanted to try different beats of some of the songs on one.
2. It could have been better; I wouldn't have mind more DnB remixes of artists that you have remixed before like BT or Tiesto. So, I still expect that amazing album that is better Dungeon Master's Guide
3. Dungeon Master's Guide is still my favorite Dieselboy album but this will last for a year or two.

Thanks for batting this one out of the park, dieselboy.

Finally! Dieselboy has finally released a new cd and this one does not disappoint.

I think the best way to sum this album up is to say the following:

If you were hiking alone with your iPod and you leg was caught in a bear trap, this new Dieselboy album would give you the courage to cut your own leg off.

When listening to this album at the gym, I wanted to drop my weights and just sucker-punch the biggest dude at the gym....then eat his face.

When listening to this album in my car (bad-*ss system), I wanted to drive head-on into oncoming traffic on the interstate.

When listening to this album in the shower, I wanted to punch a hole right through the tile.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to need to acquire a meth addiction to fully enjoy and keep up with this album.

Bravo Dieselboy....Bravo!
