3.0 out of 5 stars Downgraded to 1 star., April 29, 2009
UPDATE** 7-5-09
I have had this for a few months now and it has let me down in every way. Crashes, freezes, funny noises duing playback and start up. Its is VERY slow going thru the many different menue options. The remote control response is quirky and the lack of support is maddening.

I have been trying to contact Buffalo "support" for months and get NO RESPONSE. I even found a phone number for them. I ask for customer service, get put on hold for half an hour, then disconnected, EVERY TIME!

Do NOT buy this doorstop! The Dlink, although not five star, blows this thing away.

Older Review:
I have a Dlink unit (DSM510) that worked resonably well. But had limited functionality especialy in the music department. I have a huge music librabry stored on a NAS, the Dlink had trouble listing all the songs, it would only find the first 100 songs or so in a folder, and playback was screwy. It would play 3 or 4 songs and then crap out.

I bought the Buffalo unit in hopes of better functionality. I was wrong. The UI is pretty primitive and navigating is sketchy. You can navigate to the video folder and it will show music... with some fiddling around, like exiting all the way out, then back to the same folder and magicaly, it shows your videos. The video playback is good. It has never lagged or skipped during playback. However, the volume control on it does nothing. It has crashed a few times when I click play on a video.

Music playback is decent. If you have your music separated into different folders, like Rock, Pop, etc, you can open one of those folders and play back all the music in that folder. There is however no suffle feature, which is a real downer unless you want to listen to all your songs in a row in alphibetical order. It will not recognize playlists created my Windows media player or iTunes either.

Like a mentioned before, the UI (user interface) is primitive. The Grey and white pinstiped background makes the white text difficult to read. I have not found a way to change the color of either.

I can't say i would really recommend this. The cons are greater than the pros in my book. It does playback your music and movies, and pictures, but thats it. The quirks, lack of support, lack of shuffle feature and playlist compatibility are a real downer.
