After a long long wait due to the extended delays from Art Asylum (AA) for their rendition of the the USS Enterprise-D, all I can say that it was well worth the wait. This toy or model is near perfection that the reason for the delay was probably because Art Asylum wanted it to be perfect. Well, almost perfect. I'll explain the flaws later. Overall, they got the model right. Unlike their Enterprise-E which was a disappointment, the Ent-D in my opinion is a winner. Every tiny bit of detail on the ship from all the painted windows to the tiny ship registrations on some parts of the hull, down to the colour scheme of the ship, the guys from AA have not missed a single detail, well except for the missing windows on the neck section of the engineering section. Kinda disappointed abt this as there were windows on the prototype models prior to its development... Other than that, this model is just perfect and a great model to represent the Galaxy Class Enterprise-D. This one knocks the Playmates Ent-D in terms of details that was released many years ago off the shelve.

Now for the flaws that is really bugging me. I can't get the battery compartment on the engineering section to open!!! It requires some prying which would damage the hull slightly surrounding the battery compartment. Once opened, there is a switch inside where you can activate it to from "Try Me" mode to "Play" mode. You can also switch it off. This is a design flaw on Art Asylum's part. Even the batt compartment on the saucer section is difficult to remove without damaging the paint job.

And lastly, the display stand. Due to the saucer section, the model tend to be top heavy, so you will have to find the right balancing spot to display the ship. Otherwise, the ship will just topple forward and you risk damaging it.

Ok, if you're looking for the short answer: buy this ship!

Long answer:
This model of the Enterprise D is awesome. The ship is pre-assembled and is mostly well made. There are some spots where the assembler used too much glue and melted the plastic. The good news is that it's on the drive section under the saucer. Right where the tabs on the saucer connect to the drive section. I assume it makes it easier to dock with the saucer section. So if you don't have the saucer separated you'll never know. There is a little disfigurement on the bridge (deck 1 of the saucer section, but you already knew that) from the same problem, too much glue melted the plastic. I'll post some pictures. It's not a movie quality model, but it looks amazing to me. I've always wanted a model of the Enterprise D. I've spent hours flying this ship around my house......my kids think it's great, my wife starts to reconsider her decision to marry me. Yeah, I'm 30. However in my defense, you're never too old to love Star Trek. There is a battery compartment that takes the form of shuttle bay 1 on the saucer. It isn't the best in hiding it. There is a small piece that fell off the top and now there is a spot that is obviously not the external hull.

The compartment cap, "shuttle bay 1", comes off and you will need a small Phillips screwdriver to actually access the battery. There is a switch that I turns off the saucer section when detached. The drive sections battery compartment is located on the ventral hull, just behind the deflector dish. There are holes for the battery compartment screw and the stand along this hull. They do break the immersion, but not too much, and it's expected. The drive section takes 2 AA batteries and the saucer section takes a flat battery, I'm pretty sure it's included.

I have the playmates 1701-D a and a micro machines enterprise. The paymates version lacks really any kind of good paint job. The micromachine has good paint but the aztec is is over the top. This diamond select has plenty of detail and the paint for the most part (more on this later) is good. The sound effects and lighting are first rate and I really like the saucer seperation ability.
As for negatives, there are two. First, the paint job on the neck is not star trek, there are no windows at all. I dont know what happened but it looks strange. They have a fix for it if you contact them. They will send out decals that you can put on. I have not tried this yet so I dont know. The second problem is that getting the thing mounted on the display stand is a excercise in balance. It just does not feel sturdy at all.
Otherwise this is a great replica!

I have 4 other Star Ships from Diamond.. Enterprises A, B and E and the USS Excelsior ( I have reviews on these items in their own right) they are all slick and detailed well and perfect sizes to match the visual impact they create ... Then I ordered the Enterprise "D" excited to fit this in nicely with the other 4 ... Then it arrived !!!! What can I say .. It's a massive, bulky, cheap kids toy ( yes I'm a big kid at 35 ) those ship doesn't fit in well at all .. It's to be fair pretty awful to look at compared to the others...if I had purchased this first I'd never have ordered another so I'm pleased I didnt... It is top heavy on the saucer section, meaning it falls forward if to display it straight on of facing a little down, great that the saucer and engine section separate by way of magnetic connection and 2 stands are provided for each ... I'm not saying the detail isn't there but it's just a big ugly piece of plastic I'm sad to say.
