I have these speakers outside under covered patio in AZ, and after 30 days of (every day!) use, I am more than satisfied. Prior to purchasing these speakers, I had bought large-box brands such as Bose and Klipsch. These equal the sound quality of all previous speakers I have owned, and even surpassed them in some instances, especially in low bass sound reproduction. You will happy you made this purchase!

These speakers are some of the best outdoor speakers you can buy. Both these and their big brother (the 6500) are able to produce very clear sound and a good amount of bass in a relatively small package. I'm an AV contractor and after installing hundreds of outdoor speakers these are the ones I bought for use in my own back yard. They break in pretty well after just a few hours of moderate level listening and can go way louder than I'd ever imagine using them in day to day life.

As a professional installer of A/V gear, I've experienced quite a few speakers. High end and consumer grade. This speakers have become my go to outdoor speakers for most any situation where the price permitts. I've also had the pleasure of replacing other blown outdoor speakers, some much more expensive, with these. Everytime, the customer is please and end up happier with these than the ones they had before.

They sound, look, weather, etc., beautifully. The passive bass radiator, which is a bit of a tradition for Def Tech, really does make a surprising difference. I've replaced two sets, in two very different locations, of Bose Freespace outdoor speakers with these, which are $300 each I might add, and they sound cleaner, fuller, and last longer. I've just never been a fan of pushing a tiny single speaker to try to achieve full range response. Rather your going through fancy bose technology (AKA a plastic tube..) or not. I've also compared to some large elan's (I forget the model). These were still better. Now, if you really want to go for it, get the 6500's and you'll be golden.

If your looking for good full range outdoor speakers, these are the best bang for the buck that I've found.

I bought two of these speakers several months ago for a covered deck absolutely love them. Definitive Technology is located in Baltimore so I bought local and American made!

Bought 4 of these for outdoors. Sound is ok, but bass in particular is not great, not even as good as the Sony Boombox I bought years ago, which cost less than just ONE of these speakers! I compared sound to various others in the store, and bought 3 from them (all they had) and 1 from amazon. **5/20/15** am amending this review to add a star. These still sound better than other outdoor speakers I have heard for clarity and bass. I did add a BIC subwoofer outside (200W) also, so now these things sound REALLY good. I usually put a plastic bag over them when not in use to keep the water out. Still going strong. I suspect the newer version is worth the extra $.

I had them outside, uncovered on my patio for a couple of months and just discovered that they all contain water! They are currently drying out in my basement after i took them apart. One is very rusty inside. So, not a good choice if they will be exposed to rain, which I find a bit odd considering they are defined as outdoors and certainly aint cheap. Given that relocating and covering them is going to be a PITA, I'm wondering if the JVC kaboom would have been a better choice...

I put these in my kitchen and they sound fantastic. They are water resistant, so you can wash off cooking grease or oils with 409 and it doesn't hurt the speaker. Beautiful, nuanced sound that definitely doesn't sound like an outdoor speaker.

I've always enjoyed Definitive Technology as a company and have owned their speaker products since the mid 90s. I purchased about a year ago a set of the AW5500s to cover my back deck for some summer partying, and I have to say they do an excellent job of filling space but also providing some quality to an otherwise difficult area. Obviously you will get a little more oomph out of the 6500s but I was on a budget. The only problem I have to report is that one of the speakers ended up becoming distorted. I sent it back to DefTech after talking to a rep and they returned it repaired and good to go.

I bought a pair of the AW5500s to mount over my back deck and they sound great. I am driving them with a Yamaha R-S500 stereo receiver and I can't detect any distortion even at high volumes (haven't truly cranked them because my neighbors would hate me).

The bass is much better than other outdoor speakers I've heard in the past. Being rear-facing woofers, they use the wall they are mounted on to aid in the bass quality. For best results, the manual says to install them under and eave so you have two solid surfaces for the bass waves to bounce off of. I could hear decent bass from 0-10ft but then it kind of fell off after that. This is no surprise though being outdoors where acoustics are pretty terrible in general.

If you have the space, consider the AW6500s because they are only $40 more per speaker and the bass response looks to be better. The AW5500s are already big outdoor speakers themselves, so I think the 6500s might be too big for my eave overhangs.
