First things first. This is expensive. It's also partially (okay mostly) plastic. But there are saving graces to this pencil—and I bought several, this is across the board—that make it worth the 2-3x cost of other typical cheap mechanical pencils such as Pentel's classical design, Zebra, etc.

The click. It feels solid. Click. Click. A mechanical pencil only does so many things, so a satisfying click is notable in a mid-range pencil. Yup, nerd observation. I am so, so aware.

The metal "grip" area is smooth and has a very light, low-relief etching that allows for a grip but feels silky. Will you like this? I don't know. I do. Generic pencils in this range tend to be plastic-slick or sandpaper-finished metals. this is one of the few intermediate options.

Everything else is neither good nor bad. Pentel makes reliable, high-quality pencils for the low- to mid-range consumer end of things, and this is maintained in this pencil. Which is why it "should" cost three to five bucks—but it doesn't, and as it's superior to anything in that lower range of quality overall, it gets five stars anyway.

A pencil-loving friend literally sighed and said "I love the silky metal grips" -- if that sounds like you, this pencil delivers. Primary components are metal, and the checkered grip is a polished but non-slip wonder to those who aren't fond of the sandpaper feels of certain design from Rotring, Alvin, Koh-i-Noor, and others.

Pentel isn't especially know in the USA for high-end writing instruments, and while the barrel is plastic, nothing about this instrument feels cheap in the hand, and the lightweight materials and "standard" overall length make it a perfect day-to-day (if you use a $40 pencil as day-to-day), long-lasting addition to a collection of one or many.

OK so I'm a mechanical pencil snob. I openly admit it. I laugh at those cheap throw BICs that are like 10 for a buck. I have a decent collection of 0.9mm pencils. (ohto pm509, pilot s3, uni shift, helix expert, pentel gg 529, pentel sharp 209, pentel gg1000) and use them all. When I first got this pencil I was a little let down. I was expecting a nice heavy end like the graphgear 500 series but a trimmer profile. Nope the metal grip is actually a sleeve that slids over the thinner plastic barrel. Other than that this pencil is identical in terms of mechanics to the 500 series. Then I used this pencil for an evening. Wow what an insturment. It felt so good in my hand and wrote so smoothly without the slightest hind of tip wiggle or body flex (unlike the graphgear 500 which flexes ever so slightly). It was as comfortable to use as the gg1000 but better than half the weight! THis is a true writing insturment. A real please to use. Yes they are a bit more costly than some of the other mid quality Pentel products out there, but are so worth the bit extra. Oh and as a nice touch the lead hardness indicator works great (especially for someone like me that tends to load leads other than HB into everything!) This does come with six leads (HB- in either AIN or SUPER hi poly). If you love fine Japanese writing insturments I highly recommend this pencil.

I received this pencil quite late but it might be a new favorite
First off the metal is a smooth and knurled combination it makes sure that it wont slip. The pencil has a lead indicator too which I think is a pretty cool feature. I ordered a .4mm lead (it was cheaper) and it comes with 5 pieces of lead already inside, it I was afraid it would jam up with so many pieces of lead but, it comes with in the eraser a metal stick that helps de clog the pencil. On the cap of the pencil it has the lead size that you ordered. The one thing I don't like is that the body is plastic and that gives a cheaper feel to the pencil.

I will not down vote the product because of the quality of the package.I received the pencil in a loose package wrapped with newspaper and no original box, second the box looked as if the thing had been run over. I was quite sad about this because I had ordered many times from santa trading japan they usually ship top quality but this disappoints me. the metal tip came bent and the lead wouldn't come through but I fixed that.

This is not necessarily a negative review, but I would like to point out that if you are considering this, be aware that the grip is not of the gritty texture most commonly encountered in modern drafting pencils. It is made out of a polished stainless steel pattern, that takes some getting used to. This is the only negative aspect of the pencil. Other than that this is a perfect instrument that fits any collection. I've never experienced a breakage in its usage, which is pretty remarkable for 0.5 HB lead. It's available in most sizes from 0.3-0.9 so you're bound to find a size perfect for you. Happy shopping!

Enjoyable writing instrument. Point unscrews a bit easier than I would like and the unit lacks the weight and stability of the Faber-Castel TK-Fine Vario L 0.7 yet considering the much lower price it is great to use at school without fearing the loss of a $26+ pencil. I recommend 2B lead for an almost liquid feel to writing with minimal smudging. Great for theatrical directors and stage managers to make notations!
