This is the original unit with brushes that really pick up the dirt. It is made the same as it has been for many many years and still does the job as well as always. This is the model to buy. If you buy the one with rubber blades instead of brushes you will be sorry. Stick with the original.

All growing up, my grandmother had a Hoky. It was a puke yellow color and it was awesome. 10 years into my marriage and 4 kids later... I was searching for something to do a "quick pick up" on my area rug. I somehow stumbled across the memory of my grandmothers carpet sweeper. My whole downstairs is hardwood, and I hated hauling my vacuum up and down the stairs (almost daily) just to clean my area rug. Now don't get me wrong... I still do a thorough vacuum once a week... but with my littlest guy just starting to crawl... I was in need of something I could pull out of the closet, vacuum, and be done, in 2 minutes or less. THIS WAS THE TICKET! It's easy enough my 4, 5, and 7 year old to use. It picked up small rocks, cereal, lint, hair, wrappers... it is great! I was nervous about spending $40 on this baby... but I am SO GLAD I did!!! Totally worth it!!!! Now I can have a freshly vacuumed look ALL DAY LONG, and not worry about my baby putting something into his mouth!!!!!!

This Hoky replaces the original bought decades ago. With one exception, quality is every bit as good. The exception is the handle, which comes in two pieces for compact packaging and shipping - it it makes using it just a little wobbly. Not a deal breaker, just not quite as good as the original. The rest of the mechanics are rock solid and it really cleans. I will get one for my office, too!

Here is a product that works perfectly. Well worth the money. It does exactly what it was designed to do -- it cleans up small areas quickly, without having to drag out a vacume cleaner. We had one in the 70s and the handle broke in the 90s.....we've been wanting another ever since. It's good to see that they are still built well and that they WORK.

I had never heard of a "Hokey". When I was visiting my sister, she was babysitting her "granddogs". She had a little dog hair on her carpet, so she grabbed her "Hokey" and just swept it right up. I was so impressed with the way it worked that I ordered one immediately when I got home.
She also ordered a new one for herself (her's is about 20 years old)and one for her daughter.
Sure beats getting the vacuum out for a small job. I LIKE it!

I am very pleased with the sweeper. It works much better than a Bisell I had previously purchased--brush kept falling off. I have not had that problem with the Hoky. It picks up crumbs, lint, cat hair, and almost anything that is not stuck to the rug. It does a fair job of picking up dirt from hardwood floor, but I bought it for sweeping the carpet and it does a very good job there.

I am baffled by the poor reviews. We have had one of these Hokies for as long as I can remember - certainly more than 10 years - and it has always done everything we wanted. It's light, cleans thoroughly, is compact enough to be stowed in the hall closet and whipped out in a hurry, and easy to empty completely (just read the instructions and never use the edge bristles to pull open the flaps!). We no longer have kids in the house all the time, but with 4 cats, an outdoor lifestyle, and visitors dropping in unexpectedly, we are always cleaning up somewhere. Our house has a lot of hardwood flooring as well as tile, vinyl, carpets and oriental rugs, so we have tested the Hoky on every conceivable surface. I am about to replace it with an identical model, only because the edge brushes have finally worn out and the plastic retaining clips were so brittle with age that they snapped when I tried to remove the brush holders. We will still keep the old one for use in places where edge treatment is not so critical.
Update, March 2015 - and a downgrade from 5 stars to 4.
Got the replacement model, and still love it - except that most of the edge bristles fell out or broke off in a very short time. So if I'm paying attention to detail, I have to go round the edges of the room with a broom to get the fluff and so on out into the middle where it can be picked up with the Hoky.

I was looking for a quiet vacuum alternative or keeping a perpetually fiber-pilling wool rug in our house from looking grungy. My dad suggested this brand because he had bought a Hoky over 30 years ago (model 23A!) that still was going strong today. Not sure if this one will last as long (it seems like things aren't made like they used to be), but it definitely works VERY well. It's so good, I started using it on our hard wood floors as well in place of our shedding broom or loud, clunky vacuum cleaner. Rotating brush design is really simple and the whole thing is easy to clean. No, I'm not a shill for Hoky, just a customer who wants to make sure this awesome product is still around for at least another 30 years. Very good, well-made cleaning product that is very quiet and uses no electricity.
