BOOK REVIEW: IDENTITY MURDER BY JEAN SHELDON Kerry Grant of the Chicago Police Department is a computer whiz. She loved to play a computer game called CyberCop. Kerry and her partner, Mike Sullivan, were scheduled to attend a lecture given by detectives from six Chicago police districts. The topic was about crimes on the Internet. Not only was organized crime looking for opportunities on the Internet but individuals were also dreaming up any possible crime to make money. One of the largest crimes is identity theft. In one year there were fifteen million victims and it resulted in losses of over a billion dollars. Mike informed Kerry that the Mayor has decided to add neighborhood task forces to the city's computer crime commission. Lt. Romero chose Kerry and Mike to head up the new identify theft and computer crime task force for the six districts who were attending the meeting being held that day. Things get very interesting when Kerry gets an undercover assignment with the mob. Kerry finds they are very willing students because they want to learn all they can to be the best cyber crooks. What happens when the mob finds Kerry hacking into their system? In addition to trying to catch cyber criminals, Kerry has many things going on in her life. One of them is a new romantic relationship. Will Kerry be successful in her new undercover assignment and make it out alive? This is the first book in the Kerry Grant series. You will enjoy Kerry. She is so into computers. She has a strong determination to get things done and a great sense of humor. The story has a good plot and combines fact and fiction since we hear so much about cyber crime in today's world. Identity Murder is one that will make you keep turning the pages to find out what is going to happen next. At the end of the book there is a section titled What to Do If Your Identity is Stolen. If your identity is ever stolen, you will find this resource invaluable. Two more releases are scheduled soon: Should Old Acquaintance Be Dead and A Chilling Goodbye. We look forward to these books. In the meantime, be sure to add Identity Murder to your reading list. This is a book you will enjoy! --Nancy Eaton Bestsellersworld.com

Kerry Grant, is caught in an interesting dilemma. This beautifully written crime story is too good to miss, and the graphic details into the modern society of the hardened criminals using the internet for their evil practice of 'cyber' theft, is truly outstanding. The characters you meet are colourful and humorous, and you can almost feel and sense their every move as they each strive towards their ultimate goal, be they the criminals or the investigators involved in cracking open the den of thieves. The main character of this story, Kerry Grant, along with her partner, Mike Sullivan, are two very dedicated crime detectives for the Chicago Police Department, Twenty-third District, who find themselves involved in a particularly interesting case. Kerry's obsession with her computer game of CyberCop, plays an important part in her latest assignment to reach into the 'space' of ruthless cyber crooks, who use their knowledge of the internet to carry out their identity 'snatch' of innocent citizen's personal details, in order to drain their savings accounts in the most despicable way. Most of their victims are the elderly and sick, whose trust in the legal system is their ultimate undoing, when a 'money-grabbing' doctor at the hospital where they attend for treatment, forges and signs false death certificates in order for the 'mob' who he works for, to set the wheels of their good fortune in motion so that they can commence their false insurance claims. But they didn't bank of a certain 'little old lady' called Veronica. She was a very feisty character who certainly wasn't going to stand by whilst a bunch of shady hoodlums claimed that she was dead! They were already engaged in collecting her insurance money, and she wasn't intending to let them get away with it! With the help of her good friend, Jennifer Kinkaid, who not only happened to be a court clerk, but she was also a long lost friend of Kerry Grant. They had known one another since their school days. The two met through unusual circumstances, and after an emotional reunion, were able to catch up on their eventful past lives. Another star in the story is 'Juts', the cat, who makes a 'guest' appearance from time to time. Events started to roll, and with many twists and turns you are compelled to turn each page, not knowing what to expect. The story takes you on a roller-coaster ride at breath-taking speed into an intriguing insight into the world of the 'cyber' criminal's mind, and to remind us that we all have to watch our backs! There is also a very romantic interlude interwoven in the story, bringing a softer side to an otherwise intense situation. This new, highly talented crime writer, deserves to be 'out front' and 'on top' of all book stores, along with the best sellers of crime/thriller novels. You need to buy this book to find out 'what happens next', as this is a thoroughly exciting read, filled with humour as well as the serious issues involved with this tale. I cannot praise this book enough, and I highly recommend it, so don't be disappointed and don't miss out! --Louisa Middleton-Blake, Author Daydreams, Moonbeams and Wings over the Common

5.0 out of 5 stars A darn good mystery yarn., July 7, 2007
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
Jean Sheldon presently hails from Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is the author of poetry and drawings; a book on car repair; a "how to" on the subject of cats; and most recently, her Chicago Police Detective Kerry Grant mysteries. Sheldon has actually published two additional Kerry Grant mysteries, entitled SHOULD OLD ACQUAINTANCE BE DEAD and A CHILLING GOODBYE.

Kerry Grant is a Chicago Police Detective who has a dark secret. She lost her entire family in a RV accident three years before. When her old childhood friend, Jennifer Kincaid, comes back into her life (with another 78 year old friend who has suffered from identity theft), Kerry's sad life begins to turn around. Because of her computer savvy, Kerry is asked to join an undercover agent who has been embedded with the Chicago mob scene for a number of years in order to train him. Little does she know that love will find her, and that a little Chicago Cubs teddy bear will symbolize a new start to her life:

"'I understand not sleeping with anyone for a while, but I figured that was life after forty.' Jennifer stopped herself and remembered there wasn't anyone else for Kerry to share her great news. She couldn't talk about it with Mike, or her sisters and mom. 'I do understand, Kerry, and it's wonderful. What I don't understand is why Marty turned Chubby Bear around, or why Cubby Bear watched you to begin with. By the way, the Cubby Bear we're talking about is the little stuffed bear they sell at Wrigley Field with the Cubs hat and shirt, right?'"

Not only does Jean Sheldon write against the backdrop of Chicago and the Eastern border of Wisconsin up to Fond du Lac, she has an excellent knowledge of police procedural in Chicago. Her writing is infused with a sense of humor; a fanciful take on romance; characters that share comradery in the midst of danger; and an excellent view of the mob. IDENTITY MURDER is a wonderful first effort in what will become a beloved series about plucky Kerry Grant, her best friend Jennifer Kinkaid; Kerry's partner Mike; and the inimitable Veronica Cooke. Sheldon includes a mini-course on computer fraud and identity theft that will give readers much needed information on how to avoid cyber-crooks. She also writes a darn good mystery yarn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solving cyber crime and scams, February 21, 2009
By Cy B. Hilterman "Cy. Hilterman" (Cherry Tree, PA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After reading Jean Sheldon's most recent book, "The Woman In the Wing" I told Jean I liked her easy to read story and I would some day like to read her earlier books. Jean sent me those first three books and after reading the first one I can see that this series is going to be the same easy-to-read story but with a police heroine as the principal actor. The Chicago Police Department's twenty-third district has a very distinct character working in their detective division. Kerry Grant and her partner, Mike Sullivan work as a team to attempt to solve some of the big city crimes, of which there are many.

Jennifer Kincaid was a court reporter that lived in an old, but decent apartment building. Also in that building lived an older woman, Veronica Cooke with whom Jennifer became friends sharing time and conversation together. Kerry was a computer whiz and became acquainted with Veronica when she had to investigate the payoff of a big insurance policy on Veronica--but--Veronica wasn't dead! Kerry worked the case and taught Veronica many facets of the Internet, how to discover fraud and scams, and when to be suspicious. Eventually Veronica learned enough to start teaching other older people about the pitfalls one could fall into through the Internet. Kerry was selected to lead computer training for the Chicago Police Department since she was clearly the expert in this field.

Kerry was planted as a con artist to help a group running scams of various types on the Internet, being very successful with her infiltration. She worked with and through another plant in the group. This worked out fine until some suspicions showed up and things had to come to a head. Eventually Kerry, Jennifer, and Veronica became great friends and worked together. One day Jennifer was a hostage in her courtroom. This took the story off in another area but soon the connection became apparent.

Jean Sheldon writes in a way that any reader can understand. Her storylines are easy to follow but they are not so simple to become ridiculous. I thoroughly enjoyed "Identity Murder" with its characters and I look forward to reading the other two books in this series. Thanks Jean Sheldon.
