Turns any "PORT-MULTIPLIER COMPATIBLE" eSATA port into 5. Good performance even under heavy multi-drive use. Hot-plug works flawlessly. No software to install, just plug and go - Windows, Linux, etc. Works with cheap SATA controllers based on SiI3132, ASM1061*, and other multiplier-compatible chips.
Bought two, for a workstation and a fileserver -- both still going strong after more than 2 years constant use.

UPDATE: This multiplier works with multi-drive / RAID enclosures! On the server I've now got:
- Sans Digital TR4UTBPN RAID enclosure (4x2TB RAID5)
- Sans Digital TR4UTBPN RAID enclosure(4x3TB JBOD-Span)
- iView HFR2-SU3** RAID enclosure (4x2TB JBOD-Span)
- Kingwin EZD-2535 eSATA dock (1x2TB)
- CoolDrives SCOTTY-BL3-R 5.25" eSATA enclosure (DVD burner)
...for a total of 14 drives, all through a single eSATA port on a StarTech PEXESAT3221 eSATA card.
Performance is good, everything can hot-plug/unplug smoothly, and I could see and format all the individual drives in RAID enclosures before creating arrays.
The workstation has nearly as many drives, through an old Rosewill RC-219 eSATA card.

NOTE if using low-end "desktop" drives for RAID: While the error-recovery behavior of desktop drives can still cause problems (especially in RAID5) when a drive develops a bad spot, the vast majority of problems with brand new drives can be avoided by doing a FULL (not "quick") format of each drive before adding it to an array. (Yes it takes hours, but you can have 2-4 format operations going nearly full-speed at once, depending on the hardware.)

* Be aware, the ASM1061 chip only supports multipliers on one port at a time.
** I do not recommend this iView enclosure; 2 of 3 here have died.

Only issue with that is it took quite a bit of digging to find the ads. <G>
The easiest info to find is that this requires a port multiplier compatible connection to the computer.
Dig deep enough and you'll find that Silicon Image chips (Sil3124 and Sil3132) are specifically compatible.
Easy to confirm that my Syba dual eSATA express card used one of those.
I was told on HP site that my laptop's internal combo eSATA/USB wasn't compatible.
All info checked out. Great addition to my system.

This is a very well built unit. It works for connecting 5 external single drives to your computer if connected to a port multiplier controller, and does it very well. I would recommend this unit to anyone who needs to do this but it is a bit too high priced.

What it is not and will not do is is a way to connect more than one drive to each of the 5 ports. I have connected three different 4 bay controllers to it on three different computers and controller cards(with port multipliers) and only the first drive in each drive enclosure is recognized.

Description for this eSATA Port Multiplier states "The 5 external hard drives can be configured as RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 or combined as 1 large volume or to appear as 5 individual drives to the system." From this statement, I mistakenly thought the Port Multiplier could be configured for a RAID. THIS IS VERY MISLEADING and totally false. RAID configuration is done with SATARAID5 array manager and as stated in the User Guide: "The external Port Multiplier will only work with Port Multiplier aware eSATA host controllers. It is compatible with eSATA host controllers using the Silicon Image Chip Sil3124 & Sil3132." My eSATA controller is not based on either of these chips. Had this been noted (as it should) in the description, I would not have made the purchase. As it was, I returned the Multiplier without any hassle. Also note that the Product Dimensions are not 1 X 1 X 1 inches, but rather 1 X 2.5 X 5 inches.
