4.0 out of 5 stars Very good but has quirks, September 17, 2009
Say goodbye to your CDs forever! With the USB interface on this radio, capable of reading 64Gig memory stics, you will never need to carry around your CD cases and dig through them to find the album or song you were looking for.

The USB functionality is the main selling point of this model. After almost a year of use, it still baffles me. The radio does not read the USB drive like a computer - it only displays one level of folders from the root level. All subfolders are included but they are flattened to the root level as well. Navigation is a simple +/- process. The main problem with the system is that the system is limited to a total of 128 folders containing MP3 files. Any more than this are simply not read by the device. The radio does not organize your MP3s alphabetically as you would imagine. Instead, they are shown in the order they were copied onto the memory stick. Furthermore, the system this radio uses for folder order is still unclear to me. For example, you can create four brand new folders containing music, when the radio scans the USB deivce it may decide that the third folder you created should go before the first two. There is no obvious method for how the radio chooses this order, but it definitely neither alphabetical order or in order of folder creation.

It is a great solution for carrying hundreds of albums around with you in your car. The display on the radio is excellent and very clear. It is easy to read in anything less than full sunlight(convertible owners beware!) The song information from the MP3 tag is displayed for each song, but the radio will not automatically scroll the song title if it is longer than the screen, after the first complimentary scroll you will have to manually press the "SCROLL" button each time you wish to see the rest of the song title. There is no way to set this radio to scroll continuously.

If you are particular about organizing your music, as I am, this radio will be very frustrating for you. It will play your songs for you but not in the order you'd expect nor with the control over the display that you'd like. Navigating the folders with the control stick is not intuitive to computer users either. The choice of lighting colors is a great feature if you car's interior compliments any of the three colors. The concept of putting the USB stick at the end of a USB cable is also a great idea. Keeping the memory stick safe in your glove compartment is much nicer than plugging it directly into the face plate.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Bologna with this Sony!, March 14, 2009
By DocWizard (San Antonio, Texas) - See all my reviews
Sony makes great electronics and this unit is no exception. Had all the features I was looking for, auxiliary input in front, USB connection, and removable motorized face plate. Did not give it 4 stars because I also miss the loud, bass and treble controls. But for the price . . . simply cannot be beat!!!
