I've had my Aulos 309 alto since the early 70s. It's modeled after a Coolsma custom instrument, and was the very first high-quality plastic instrument to come on the market. It has a wonderful depth to its tone that is rivaled by only a few other plastic recorders, such as the Yamaha 300 series. It's also very nimble in the upper registers; I have never played another kind of plastic alto, even the wonderful Yamaha 300s, that can hit the third octave F and G as cleanly, clearly, or reliably.

Its response compares very favorably to custom wood recorders, although the warmth and flexibility of its tone don't come close to matching that of the expensive, custom wood ones, like Prescotts or Boudreaus or Sorels or Morgans. This Aulos is far, far better than inexpensive wood recorders like Hohner or Adler, or any of the really crappy East German made ones from the 60s and 70s.

Anyone who buys an Aulos or Yamaha plastic alto is going to get their money's worth. Zenon is another maker of high-quality plastic recorders. I'd say that the Aulos 309 alto and the Yamaha 300 series altos are the best plastic alto recorders on the market. Don't waste any money on cheaper knock-offs like Peripole, Woodnote, Angel, Gill, LMI, or any of the other brands. They don't play well, and as beginning instruments they'll just provide a frustrating experience when it comes to getting a good tone out of them.

This is a great alto recorder with great sound. I give the Aulos 5 stars if you have a large hand but if you have a small hand I give it 3 stars. It is an excellent recorder but if you have a small hand you need to read this review. I've been playing a soprano C recorder for several years now. I'm getting pretty good at it but am not a professional in any way, shape or form! I heard that the sound on the alto F recorder is much nicer than the soprano so I decided to buy the Aulos 309A alto recorder (available only through seller). According to all the reviews I read the two best recorders are either the Aulos or the Yamaha. In the end I decided to get the Aulos because most said the high notes were easier to get and that the sound quality was great. It is! The Aulos has a really great professional sound to it. I will NEVER go back to the soprano after hearing the alto.

But none of the reviews I read said that the Aulos is actually longer than the Yamaha. And for me...this has made all the difference. Stretching as far as I can, from my index to my pinkie finger is exactly 5 inches wide (on my right hand).

I really struggled trying to get a clear low F note on the Aulos (all holes covered). I could reach the holes but just barely. It was a struggle. So I decided to buy the Yamaha YRA-28B III alto recorder (available through amazon). When I measured both I found that the Yamaha is a ½ of an inch shorter in length than the Aulos. They are pretty much the same around but the Aulos is a little longer. I also measured the distance from the bottom two holes to the 4th hole up (holes that pinkie to index fingers cover on right hand) and found that the Yamaha is exactly a ¼ of an inch shorter in length than the Aulos. The Aulos is 5 ¼ inches and the Yamaha is exactly 5 inches.

The Aulos Alto is a finely crafted instrument for a beginner like me. I am very impressed with the tonality, and the ease with which to reach the key holes. IMHO, I made the right decision to purchase this instrument over the suprano ...If you are just starting out with the recorder, this is a very good instrument to go with.

Because the item description contained no mention of a thumb rest being included, I ordered one. The recorder does indeed come with a thumb rest and now I have two. There's no need for anyone to order one for this gem of an instrument.

Stretching as hard as I can, my fingers are five inches from index to little finger. I can play the Aulos A309A 3 piece F alto comfortably.

I love this recorder! I had used a friend's Aulos and fell in love with it, so I bought my own. A slightly different model, I think I like this one better. It has a very clear tone and it speaks very well in all registers. The beauty of the lower range is what really makes this instrument sparkle.

One problem, however, even though I have fairly large hands for a woman, it is hard to reach that last hole!

After playing the soprano recorder for a year I've advanced to the alto. There are clearly things I like about the alto over the soprano( though the soprano is best to start out with.) Since this Aulos is the only one I've tried I can't compare it to others but so far I love the quality and the clear sound. It seems to be made very well and I anticipate a lot of use out of it. It's highly recommended.
