Truly...the light of discovery was burning brightly at Fermilab, but some things are better left in darkness. Some doors should never be opened; better they be bolted shut-forever! That giant particle accelerator not only unlocked the secrets of matter and energy, it punched a hole through the very fabric of space and time. What emerged from that hole was not of this world, maybe-not even of this universe.

The trouble with having a skeleton key is that you can never be sure of what's standing behind the door it unlocks. And as that door creeps open, you may just find that no matter how hard you push, something on the other side pushes back-just a little bit harder. And there's nothing you can do to close it again.

1st Corinthians 1:19 "For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent."

The print version is 340 pages.

About the Author

My inspiration for writing The Anomaly came from a visit to the Fermilab particle accelerator located in Batavia, Illinois. At the time, Fermilab was home to the largest particle accelerator in the world. Upon completion, the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland will own that distinction. A day long visit ended up lasting two weeks as I talked to scientists, explored the facilities, and generally made a nuisance of myself. Though the Anomaly is a work of fiction, the science and settings are based on fact. There really is a herd of buffalo roaming the grounds. The Feynman Computing Center, Robert Rathbun Wilson Hall, Beam Tunnel, and Fermilab Lake are all there. Fermilab is a real place that the public can visit year round. 3.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas but a little flawed in the telling, July 30, 2008
By Dwight Evans (Red Bluff, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I also was encouraged to read the book on my Kindle and received an invitation and gift certificate.

And I agree totally with the reviewer who mentioned that a good edit and rewrite would have helped. One example: a "surrogated" knife. There were many odd uses of words and misspellings.

I also agree the dialog is much better than the narrative. I found myself relaxing when the characters were talking. It flowed much better and seemed realistic.

The narrative is awkward and, at times, confusing. I still am not sure who was telling the story or when he wrote it or who the guy is who found the manuscript.

Although the dialog was well done, you couldn't really differentiate the characters, and I couldn't really tell you who was who.

But the story is clever and had some great new ideas, monsters, and dangers. It is also timely since I believe the world's largest accelerator is being built right now. And scientists aren't quite sure what it will be capable of. I have read far worse sci-fi novels and I hope Asher Dan writes a sequel that tells a little more about the alien creatures and just what happened to open the doors between the dimensions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story, July 20, 2008
This sci-fi story is interesting and well written. It seems to be the first of series. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it tends to be a bit wordy. However, very well done for what appears to be a first book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, I liked the Kindle too..., July 19, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I just read the "Anomaly" on my Dad's Kindle and loved it. Now, I wish I had one of my own. (Do you hear that Dad?) This is the first time I've used an e-book reader so it took a little getting used to.

Anyway, I love sci-fi and this book was a good one. We studied particle accelerators in school last year (junior) so the story had a lot of relevance. I remember my teacher saying that there may actually be other dimensions...of course; hopefully, the things that happened in the "Anomaly" won't happen in real life.

I especially liked the way the story unfolded...first with the strange fish. That was really neat. Then all the things that started happening with the accelerator. I thought the part about the balloon detector was funny, but most of the book was downright scary.

I think a giant particle accelerator going berserk someday could really happen...I guess that's what made the story so real to me. I was also amazed to find out that Tesla, HAARP, and Fermilab are really real and not just made up. GREAT BOOK! Can't wait for a sequel!

1.0 out of 5 stars Is this a rip off of the Half-Life game?
To be fair, I haven't read this book, nor do I intend to. What is this some kind of vanity press or something? Reading the plot does remind me of the Half-Life game. For $4. Read more
