One Of The Most Enduring Of The "Easy Listening" Orchestras

In the midst of the burgeoning phenomenon known as Rock 'N Roll from the mid-1950s on to the end of the decade there were repeated attempts within certain elements of the music industry to smother it, including the attempted (and in some cases successful) black-balling and discrediting of some of its earliest proponents such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry. Some major labels, especially those who were tardy in latching onto their own R&R stars to match RCA Victor's Elvis Presley tried pushing other forms of music, including a re-birth of the Folk sound and its Caribbean equivalent, Calypso, along with the sing-along choruses.

Others tried the soft sound of Muzak, first patented during the Roaring Twenties by U.S. Army General George Squier, who allegedly coined the term from the combination of "music" and Kodak (why the latter is anyone's guess). In any event, it was designed as background music to be played in elevators, before subsequently branching out to office buildings, shopping malls, and telephone lines (while you were "on hold"). By the time R&R had become firmly ensconced, however, those who viewed that genre as the ne plus ultra began to derisively regard anything that smacked of a soft orchestral sound as "elevator music" regardless of its general widespread popularity, and that included the offerings of those like James Last, The 101 Strings, The Knightsbridge Strings, and one André Kostelanetz.

Born on December 22, 1901 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, he managed to get out from under the murderous Bolsheviks in 1922 and relocate to the U.S. and later that decade began conducting concerts for the fledgling radio networks.
