I decided to try some Philips disks but my disk duper program says they're made by CMC Magnetics. If you read the cdfreaks forum and other places on the web where people discuss optical media, CMC is considered mediocre quality consumer-grade media. They're probably okay for short-term storage, but my other consumer grade disks, such as those from Ritek and Memorex, are showing high failure rates after 3-5 years. Some people are saying their files are unreadable after just a year or two.

I would just go with Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim--if you can get real Japanese made Verbatims. The problem with Verbatim these days is that they've licensed their technology to a number of offshore makers whose quality isn't as good. So try to get the Japanese made ones. The Taiwanese ones are said to be probably okay, too.

The Taiyo Yudens came up again and again in these discussions, especially for consistency and reliability. I recently bought a stack and have had no problems, burning disks mainly on a Pioneer burner. But the real test will be if they last for 5-10 years, which is what I need.

The other possibilities for high-quality media are a couple of very expensive disks, at over 2 bucks a disk, in fact. The first is made by MAM-A or Mitsui Advanced Media of America, or also their European division. The second is by Mitsubishi-Kogaku. These use both a gold layer for oxidation protection and a silver layer for higher reflectivity. The Mitsui media use a phthalocyanine dye, said to be more stable even than Taiyo Yuden's super-cyanine dye, and also the layers are fully bonded instead of only edge bonded which is what most manufacturers do.

After using these DVDs (I bought 2 100 Ct spindles) I have found a 46% failure rate on recordings. It is extremely frustrating to have to record things over and over until I finally get a good DVD from the spindle. Not worth the money.

I will never buy these again. Most of them will NOT work!! For every 1 that works, there's about 2 to 3 that won't. We have thrown so many in the trash already!! I ordered a different brand after about 5 days of throwing so many of these in the garbage!!! Worst purchase ever!!!

I am not certain if I have a hardware malfunction or these discs were just very poor quality, but they failed at a large rate and so I could not possibly tell another to buy these. I am thinking of asking Amazon for a partial refund.

I'm thankful I only needed to burn 75 DVD. While burning these 75 copies I came across 12 defective DVDs. It would take my laptop about 50 minutes to burn the first DVD. After this copy was burned, each copy would take 15 minutes. Each time I came across a defective DVD my computer would reset, so I would once again have to wait 50 minutes for a master copy to burn. Being on a tight time schedule I was extremely frustrated by these defective DVDs. I will never purchase PHIPIP brand blank DVDs again.

Great product at great value. I think the spindle and handle is a very good way to store the disks.

Up till now, I have bought nothing but TDK and Verbatim discs. But, the prices go up and down like the gold-standard.

I bought the Philips discs on the theory that price is really the only variable. Quality is generally good for all major brands, right?

These discs have worked fine in my machines, but there are other issues. First, the tower is unlike any other that I have seen.
The top (which has a fold-down handle), unscrews like a jar lid. It takes quite a few turns, maybe 10, before it comes off.
A lot of bother compared to other designs. Second, I made the mistake of removing the plastic film label on the sides since these obscure
the number of blank discs remaining.

But here, the label IS the tower's case-siding. Once the label is removed, the discs --all of them--are exposed to dust, spilled coffee, or whatever.
One other annoyance is that the Philips brand labeling covers much of the disc space, leaving less for my own pen-labeling.
If the discs are on sale, I'll certainly buy more since I can transfer them to other "spent" tower cases. But, all things being equal, I'll stick with TDK or Verbatim.

My husband loves to burn home movies and the compilation of his favorite musics that's why he needed a constant supply of blank dvds. There one hundred blank dvds on this that as a 16 times write speed and each stores up to 4.7 gigabytes. We have tried dvds from other brand and they all work the same in my opinion. The only problem my husband encountered with this brand is that three of the dvds weren't good. At first we thought that the laptop burner is acting up but after burning files using a different dvd from the same batch the burning of files started and everything went well. The tower case protects the unused dvd's from dust, just remember to keep them covered and the tower case can also be recycled and use to store the burned dvds.
